Would importing make this a whole lot more complicated/expensive?

    Hey folks,
I'm looking to get as big a 9 seater van as possible, that can be driven on a regular B license (restricted to Driver+8/3.5t GVW), which I may also eventually convert to a camper too.

I'm looking at either an ELWB/Jumbo Transit, or a VW crafter and it seems any minibus in the right size, is either 16/17 seater or wheelchair accessible, so it's most likely inevitable that any van I get, I'll need to get changed on the log book down to a 9 seater. Unfortunately it also seems the vast majority of these vans when they are minibuses are also over 3.5t GVW. This isn't the same with their panel van counterparts, which are mostly 3.5t GVW. I'd also rather just 4 tyres/single rear axle.

From what I know, it'd be too pricey to convert from a regular panel van as you need to have windows etc if there's to be passengers in the back.

    I can either:

    Buy in Ireland
Much less choice. Pay no import fee. I'm not sure does the tax class change if going from a 17 seater to a 9 seater? Is it still commercial rate of €333/pa?

If I end up buying one over 3.5t, I'm not sure can it be downgraded to a 3.5t GVW so easy here?

Maybe going straight for a camper conversion would actually work out cheaper if all I need is running water/cooker and a fixed table?

    Buy from the UK
Much more choice but much more hassle and potentially higher costs taking flights/ferry import fees into consideration. I've seen a bit about downgrading in the UK, but it might be difficult to arrange it there, especially if I've no UK address.

I also see the VRT of €200 for large/commercial vans is restricted to minibuses with a minimum of 12 seats so I don't know what way it would work if I then:

convert a 12+ seater down to 9 after importing
convert a 12+ seater down to 9 on a vehicle I buy here.

If anyone could shed any light on the above as for the best way to approach this to get the end goal (big van with 3 seats up front and 6 in the back and plenty of floor space left), it would be greatly appreciated :)
