ID for NCT

Car was going through NCT yesterday. Website says you need to bring ID - either your driving license or public services card (psc).

I haven’t got a psc and i’m waiting for my new license to be delivered so I brought my passport. Was told that it wasn’t a valid ID.

When I was renewing for my driving license, if I had a psc, I could have applied on-line, as opposed to having to make a personal visit.

Seems like the psc is usurping the passport. Is this legal?

By law you must carry your driving licence when you drive. Presumably you drove you car to the nct centre so should have had your licence?

I had a letter from the driving licence people saying it was being renewed.

For clarity, was the car actually tested ?

As I read NCT's checklist they require QUOTE "You bring identification (driving licence) with you on the day of the test. The person who brings the car for inspection brings their identification with them (driving licence) as failure to provide the required identification will result in the vehicle not being issued an NCT certificate at the time of testing"

    IMHO this could be construed two ways ;

    1. The car will be tested but an NCT certificate will not be issued until valid ID is presented.

    2. The car will not be tested unless you present valid ID.

I see nothing in their wording to empower them to refuse to test the vehicle over ID.

It would be worthwhile challenging NCT over this as acceptance of a driving licence but refusal of a passport - as valid ID - seems very restricted. I would ask them on what authority do they refuse a passport as valid ID.

Look at the variety of documents you can present as valid ID for voting purposes.

But the only two valid id’s acceptable were a driving license or a psc. Why is a passport not acceptable?

They do accept EU ID cards/licences as ID.

Of course they accept licences, but how could they accept ID cards and not passports?

They changed the rules that only acceptable forms of ID are drivers licence and PSC. Passport used to be accepted up until a year ago. This PSC crap is ridiculous, it could all be ruled illegal any moment.

I hadn't a licence with me (same situation as you, being renewed), i just brought my sister with me who had a current licence and everything was fine.

I was getting my car recently and heard someone asking them what has a drivers license got anything to do with testing a car.

I think he had a point as it’s a car test and nothing else.

Seems like a nation we are asked to give sensitive information for things that are not required. Pps numbers for Irish water which was reversed

I agree with you. If you have booked your test and paid for it that should be enough.
I would like to see the NCTs legal authority to demand your licence. The Garda has to get this authority from the Road Traffic Act
