Tax back on €10,000 Home improvements 2018?

    Hi
    I've searched this forum and Boards in general but to no avail.
    I was searching for info on the tax relief which existed a couple of years back whereby if you spent €10,000 on home improvements (owner occupied residence), you could claim back some of that amount?

    In 2015 I had new windows fitted and last week I had a new kitchen installed, the sum of both have taken me over €10,000.


    Does this tax relief still exist?

    I wonder if the scheme you are thinking of is the Home renovations scheme. This is still in operation. what you get back is the VAT portion of the amount you spend. if you look this up on revenue.ie i'm sure it will explain it all to you and the details of how to claim the credit.

    Yes I think that's the one and how great it's still up and running :D

    It's the home renovations incentive (HRI). You get 13.5% of the money spent back, up to a limit of €4050, spread over two years, provided you paid enough tax in each year.

    The HRI rules are very clear about the sequence, the key one being that it has to be done on ROS by both builder and homeowner and the ROS process must start before the work.
    IMO your situation is a non runner

    If the contractor is not a HRI qualifying contractor, they will not be able to enter the details to HRI online. It is important to check that the work details are on HRI online before work starts. If you don’t check and the Contractor is not a HRI qualifying Contractor you won’t be able to claim the HRI tax credit.

    What should I give to my contractor?
    Before any work begins, you should:

    tell the contractor that you will be applying for the HRI Tax Credit
    ask the contractor to confirm that the they are a qualifying contractor under the scheme
    ask the contractor to enter the details of the work through HRI online
    give your contractor details of your Property ID (your Property ID is included on your Local Property Tax (LPT) letters from Revenue)
    tell the contractor if it is a rental property.
    What does my contractor have to do?
    The contractor must then enter the details of the work through HRI online. It is up to you to confirm that the contractor has done this before the work begins. They must also enter payment details as you make them. You will be unable to claim the HRI Tax Credit if the contractor does not do this.

    Thanks for info above - I obviously didn't realise myself and the contractor had to have the whole HRI thing completed before work began - that's hugely disappointing.
    When I got the windows done I was given the impression by the window installers something could be claimed afterwards - my own fault for not making the time to look into it properly.


    For anyone else reading this thread, from what I read on revenue.ie yesterday this scheme is finishing December 31st 2018, the limit of expenditure is €30,000, allowing you a whopping €4050 back (over two years).


    I know the info you have given is saying I cannot claim after the work has been completed, but I'll probably try and call revenue just to be sure.

    Window supplier - Yes definitely

    Kitchen supplier and installers were IKEA (installation contracted out by IKEA to separate fitters) I will ask.

    Heads up for anyone reading this thread
    I have just called the tax office to get further info on the HRI Scheme - there is no problem at all claiming HRI after the work has been completed.
    The revenue person said it's fine to call to the window installers and ask them to put through my claim from work done 3 years ago, it doesn't have to be processed before the work has started.
    I will have to claim next year though as I'm too late for this year's tax credits.
    Good news for me :D
