    Starts September 14th.
Hulu has slotted Friday, September 14 for the premiere of Beau Willimon’s straight-to-series drama The First, starring Natascha McElhone and Sean Penn. The premium streaming service also released first-look photos of the series, some of which can be seen above and below.

Written by Willimon and executive produced by Willimon and his producing partner Jordan Tappis, The First follows the first human mission to Mars, exploring the challenges of taking the first steps toward interplanetary colonization. The story focuses not only on the astronauts, but also on their families and loved ones, as well as the ground team on Earth.

“It’s a story about the human spirit,” said Willimon when the series order was announced. “About our indomitable need to reach for unknown horizons. About people working toward the greatest pioneering achievement in human history. And about the cost of that vision, the danger and sacrifice – emotional, psychological, and physical – that’s required to achieve it. How ordinary, imperfect people band together and overcome a myriad of obstacles to grasp the extraordinary.”

Never heard of it, but the trailer looks good. Natascha McElhone is very good, as is Penn obviously.

I liked the opener. I can see why the Guardian review (2/5) was written the way it was, though.

It's a bit emo for my liking. I was expecting space and the problems surrounding a mission to mars to be more central to the plot tbh. It's nearly completely about the crew and their family issues which is fine as part of a show....but when its the entirety of the show? I'm not sure.

Bit of a vanity project for Penn too. We get it, Sean, you got in great shape for the show but we don't need a 17th shot of you with your shirt off. We get it.

And don't get me started on his daughter. Jesus Christ the daughter in this is just the worst. "I need distance". No, you need a good slap. Everybody around her bending over backwards to try and help her and this is the crap she comes out with. You are a junkie by choice. Take some responsibility for your actions ffs. I can't stand how narcissism like this is just accepted these days.

A bit disappointed to be honest.

    Yeah, what's the story that?

I'm OK ish with the show, without thinking much of it. I mean, it's fine. It's from the bloke who wrote House of Cards so I've pretty low expectations anyway.

Time to dust off the From the Earth to the Moon DVDs.
