    Hi Electric Ireland Support team,

I am buying new Electric Heated Towel Rail. 150 Watt heating element. Can you please calculate how much it will cost me to run it monthly.

Please use standard electric Ireland rates.

    Thank you in advance,
    Jesse

    Hi Jesse,

Thank you for getting in touch.

If you confirm whether your ESB Networks meter is 24-hour (same rate at all times) or day/night, whether you pay by direct debit, and approximately how long you would need to have the heated rail switched on, we should then have all we require to provide you with an approximate cost as soon as possible.

    Thanks,
    Una

    Hi Una,

I use Electricity NightSaver plan paid by direct debit. I'd like to use the heated rail switched on 24 hours daily.

I'd like to know approximate cost. No need to be very precise.

    Thanks and Regards,
    Jesse

If it was to be on constantly it would cost you roughly €208 per year on esb 24hr tariff.

However the heater is more than likely equipped with a thermostat so the heater may only be running for 12 hours a day so that would split your bill of €208 in half.

    Hope that helps

    Hi Jesse,

Thank you for bearing with us. The below is an approximate calculation for a NightSaver meter. This does not take into account the thermostat mentioned.

A unit of electricity is a kilowatt hour (kWh). A kilowatt is comprised of 1,000 watts. So, for example, an appliance that uses 1,000 watts in one hour uses a unit, a 100-watt lightbulb takes 10 hours to use a unit, etc.

Therefore, a 150-watt heater takes approximately six hours and 40 minutes to use a unit.

For a day/night (NightSaver) meter, from 1st August, the Electric Ireland day rate (with direct debit and Electric Ireland Online Billing discounts) will be (cents) approximately 0.18 per day unit.

The night rate (with all of the above criteria) will be (cents) approximately 0.09.

Both include VAT. The day unit rate is in effect from 9am until midnight, the night unit rate is in effect from midnight until 9am.

During the day rate hours (15 hours in total) two units (totalling approximately 36 cent) would be used in approximately 13 hours 20 minutes, so approximately 4.5 cent would be used for the remaining one hour 40 minutes (approximate total: 40.5 cent per day rate period).

During the night rate hours (nine hours in total) one unit (approximately 9 cent) would be used in approximately six hours 40 minutes, so approximately 2.3 cent would be used for the remaining two hours and 20 minutes (approximate total: 11.3 cent per night rate period).

In a 30-day month, the night units would add up to approximately €3.40, and the day units would add up to approximately €12.15.

This brings the total to approximately €15.55 per 30-day month.

If you have any other questions, please let us know.

    Best regards,
    Una
