    This is an interesting one.

I don't know how or why extra money will suddenly make a teacher materialise. Perhaps they are trying to compete with UAE applicants and entice them to stay?

The Sun?? It's one thing you're guaranteed of in education is that parents are outraged. In fact, some people just live to be outraged.

Fiona O'Loughlin is too busy getting RSE bill over the line to be worried about Richard's day to day issues.

Is this not due to to inadequate enrolment numbers rather than a lack of teachers though? The money is to hire a teacher the Dept won't pay for at all, not to enhance the DES salary to attract applicants.

I have said this already but the government do not give a toss about classes being amalgamated and schools hiring teachers without the PME. They may say otherwise but they don't care. The only action which will make the government act is when principals begin to send home students and parents have to come in and collect them.

41 pupils with 1 teacher though? Is that not against health and safety

Prob not unless it's PE. The school should still have the correct ratio overall so I assume there's a few classes that are smaller down the line.

Where I went to primary was small enough so all classes were doubled up 3rd+4th 5th+6th etc. I think we turned out ok ! But there would only be about 20 max. The curriculum was less packed then and we had loads of time to do everything and time for stories, drama and songs even in 6th class.
But now I'd say it'd be a tough slog with 41 5th and 6th all together.

There were 43 in my primary class, not multigrade. Obviously this is not ideal nowadays but it's still common enough locally when classes are split due to absence, which happens fairly regularly due to no subs available. It sounds like they're losing a teacher due to falling enrolment numbers at the younger end of the school. And due to the impracticality of amalgamating say 6th with 2nd instead of with 5th the classes end up very big at the senior end and are probably a little better at the junior end.

It's not a great situation for education but it's not due to the shortage of teachers.

That's just crowd control isn't it? Mad.

I wonder how many will stay after graduating?

Crazy in 2018 for this to happen. So unfair on students, parents and teachers. Our government really does not care about Irish people especially people in the rural schools in the West.

They have to get in first, it'll be 5 years before we see them in schools.

Looks like there might be a shortage going by educationposts. I have never seen as big a list in July.

Saw this article when it first appeared, surely the written equivalent of "problem solved, nothing to see here, move along"?

It's hard to know how many of these are actual real jobs though. Many are just advertising as a formality. Lots of people getting CIDs which is good for them.

I've seen some of those jobs advertised last year.

Going by the dates, it's a bit last minute to try and open it up to as much candidates as possible.
    • posted mid july.
    • Application deadline start of August
    • Interivew Mid August
    • Start 2 weeks later.

If it's not internal, then you'd need the type of candidate that could get a job and start 2 weeks after at the drop of a hat (moving, rent etc)... and hope they aren't applying for other jobs with better contracts etc.

It's happened a bit, going by past posts here in the past though. Interviewed in late August/early september and started the following week... or else told that they didn't get the job only to be rang a bit later and asked if they were still available.
