Micksgarage brake disc set - opinions\advice

Needed rear brake discs for e39 and decided on Micksgarage.com.
Ordered Tuesday, Dispatched Thursday, Delivered Friday - All good.

Checked the goods - Not good.

How hard was it for them to provide 2 different types of the same part?
Same part numbers and size but one is 250gm heavier in weight - (not mentioning the different shade and the effect on my OCD).

Should I fit them and forget about it or should I send them back or at least for them to provide a matching one?

I need to get the car back on the road for a retest for the NCT so under time pressure.

I’d send them back. The min thickness specs engraved on the outer lip seem to be slightly different. Much better to have everything matching on an axle

If you're under time pressure fit them, you will have forgotten the difference after a week.

If one is a good bit heavier than the other, that’s not ideal.

Not ideal, but 250g... half a pound... 8oz...... maybe in F1....:D:D

I wonder as a percentage of total weight of the disc? And did OP weigh them or is it printed each box?

Shoddy, and that would piss me righ off, but they will work if you want to take the handy route rather "wasting time" or money sending stuff around and waiting for replacments.
Yeah I suppose that's the kind of stuff that can happen.... but hey ho at least QH is a good brand ;-)

Micks Garage are renowned for 5hit like this. At least you got parts that will fit though, I got sent the wrong pads and I had to pay to send them back.

I'd leave them off. Use Mister-Auto, find them far far better.

Agreed, but I find at least 5 days to deliver. I bought OE ATE front brake discs for my BMW for €70 pair a few months ago, good value.

The wait is worth it for correct good quality parts. Mucks garage almost rarely sell OE components whereas you have the choice generally of OE or aftermarket with Mister-Auto.

It’s a lot when you’re talking inertial force, as well as completely different characteristics between the two discs.

I wouldn't fit different ones except in an emergency (temporarily).

Again... usual shît from mocks garage.

Would never buy off them again...they sent me the wrong parts, wouldn't admit to their mistake even though I proved the part was wrong. Wanted me to pay for return postage - cowboys at best - scammers

I wouldn't accept those unless I was under time pressure to get it done.

Have you checked Amazon? (hear me out) I have found a good few bargain price car parts over the last year or so, all sold by Amazon. Decent brands too (Lemforder, Brembo, Febi, VDO etc.). Prime trial gives you fast delivery too.

On your order did you order 2*whatever, or 1*left and 1*right?

Micks garage certainly need to teach their staff some basics in customer service.

Orderia few bits, selected collection, went to collect after 3 as it had stated, then was told curtly that I should have waited for the email.

They got the items and reminded me rather snarkily that next time to wait for the email.

There has been no next time.

Was on the limit of my weighing scales - (red lined it).

    They’re even different thicknesses.

The second (heavier) one is the one you wanted.

They don't do collection anymore - which was the method I used in the past and is a big loss IMO.
If I was able to collect these discs I would have spotted the problem straight away (different sized boxes) and marched straight back in.

I measured 10mm with a vernier caliper on both, so I think the 8.1\8.4 might refer to the wear level for replacement.
Sizewise they seem identical but the metal seems different.

    Yeah that’s the minimum thickness.

They’re out of stock on the ones you wanted.

    Yep, I spotted that.
Anyway I reluctantly decided to fit them due to a number of reasons:
    1. Not inspired after ringing their customer services - fella on phone couldn't give two flying fcuks.
    2. Hassle of having to send them back.
    3. Cost to me to send them back.
    4. Time pressure due to weather (driveway diyer).
    5. Time pressure to fit to due to NCT retest and to give time for the brakes to 'bed in'.
    6. Same discs are no longer listed in stock - so would not get a match for the odd one and for a different brand would have to go up in price (and factor in price of posting back this set).

Other than that - a lesson learnt.

Now the fun of fine tuning the balance of the hand (parking) brake. :(

OK, I'm sure all will be fine and good luck with the job from a fellow driveway diyer.

But where to put the extra weight? Near side or off side..... which one do you want to see when you get in the car?

I'm inclined to put the heavier one off-side...... but maybe a better balance if heavier one near side when you are alone in the car....

The discs are unsprung weight so they won't be balanced by the suspension anyway. In all reality I don't think it will a noticeable difference to braking performance.

It is disappointing though knowing they aren't identical and whoever sent out two odd brake discs thinking "that's fine", I can't even understand, they are one of only a handful of items on a car where a matching pair is the expected norm.
