Im considering getting rid of my 2005 VW Touran. I have looked into lots of 7 seaters and I have my heart set on a seat alhambra. Trouble is im finding it hard to find a site that easily compares the different models. What im interested in is the difference between the 2010 > models and refreshed 2015> models.

Im not sure of my budget at the moment but I really like the 2015 model.

So are there any good websites that give a clear comparison of the different models?

Mainly used for school runs but at least twice a week it will do a 120klm round trip.

    Any model to avoid?

Don't think you will find anything around Irish specs but below is a comparison of the different UK specs:

The Citroen C4 grand Picasso has me curious also. They seem to be going cheaper that the Alhambra and alot more gizmos as standard.

Im looking at 2013 -2015 models of both. What would you choose?

There are MPVs and Full Size MPVs. I suggest you decide which one you need size and interior space wise first as full size MPVs are more expensive and spacious than MPVs.

    Some Examples:

MPV - VW Touran, Citroen Grand Picasso, Opel Zafira, Peugeot 5008, Kia Carens

Full size MPVs- Ford Galaxy/S-Max, Seat Alhambra, VW Sharan

Smax isn’t the same as he galaxy. More like a touran or grand Picasso. Small back back seats and can’t be moved.

Galaxy like the sharan or albraham have proper back back seats and are moveable. Way more practical imo

I done ALOT of testing of these cars over the last few years.

First the Grand Picasso and Peugeot 5008 are the exact same car. They are very popular in Ireland as they are cheaper than rivals. People have stories of issues but my brother has 5008(2012 or 2013) and he has done close to 200k km at this stage and very few problem. Nothing major. It is due a refresh now.

The back seats on all of these are small. These are the MPV's

The back seats are too small so we didn't buy MPV. Also the Grand Picasso is not for everyone.....glass everywhere. The Misses sat into it and wouldn't even test drove it, walked into garage and told me to test it if I wanted:P

The SMAX is an odd one. It is a bit bigger to the MPV but not as big as Alhambra. I had one. Loved it. Really really nice to drive and it feels more like a car to drive.

We then decided to go bigger. So you have Alhambra, Galaxy and Sharan(Alhambra in VW badge). Really the Sharan wasn't in running due to lack of availability

The Alhambra was the preferred option because of sliding doors but the spec on most of them was shocking. We ended up buying a Galaxy UK import to get the decent spec. Really if I was doing it now I would ask the dealer to bring in UK Alhambra, but the Galaxy met the criteria perfect and it had a hitch on it which was a massive bonus

The difference between the Galaxy and other cars, we had 6 adults and one baby in it. The adults could sit in the boot seats without any issue. You would not get a large child(10+) into the boot seats in Grand Picasso or any of the MPV's...

The SMAX you might have a chance but I never tried. The difference between the SMAX and Galaxy.....you are driving a transit in the Galaxy....it is huge and gives massive space but you lose that driving experience....

I did also look at new 5008(again boot too small), Opel(didn't like at all), Touran(couldn't find a decent one second hand)

Thanks shefwedfan. Very informative. Yeah the Alhambra is first preference alright. Did you research the different engines in the various models. Any engine to avoid due to issues ?

PS it will most likely be a UK import. Hopefully I'll hear something over the next few weeks as the dealer is looking now

I know what you mean with less space and practicality but S-Max should be using the same chassis with lower roof so it is still bigger than mpvs like touran/grand picasso (S-Max is 20 cm longer and 8 cm wider than a grand picasso). S-max may be needing its own class :D

The Galaxy has the TDCi engine that is in all Ford's. The Alhambra has the same engine in all VW's/Seats/Audi etc etc

Both are around long enough if anything major went it could be fixed fairly easy

I bought import for spec but got from Windsor, so I got a 3 years major parts warranty on it(300 quid) So covers engines/gear box etc. A bearing went in a wheel recently and I paid nothing to repair it so it has already paid for itself(500+ to repair)....you do pay a premium for buying from Windsor as well but I got caught with a clocked car import before and since then I prefer to use main dealers......
