I have a 1.6 TDI Ford Focus that has recently started having a strange issue while driving. Whilst in the middle of a drive, the car suddenly loses power and has very poor acceleration, especially up hills. The issue can be seen in the dash computer, for example it happened today and Instant Fuel wouldn't go above 7.7l/100km in 4th gear and 5.9l/100km in 5th gear. The issue goes away if I turn the car off and on again and might return a day later.

    Anyone seen this before?

For me I had this issue multiple times with my 2011 Focus. 3 times I think and all 3 times it was bad diesel.....or so I was told. Fuel Filter changed and software updated. Job done. After the 3rd time I put nothing but Topaz(Circle K) in and I hadnt any issues again.

Sounds like your car is intermittently going into limp home mode where the car's ECU registered a problem and reduces power in the engine to prevent damage. Any warning lights appearing on the dashboard? You would probably need to have the car hooked up to a diagnostic computer and see if there are any fault codes registered on the car's ECU which may help point to what the issue is.

No warning lights whatsoever, which is why it confused me. I've had it go into limp mode before when I had a DPF issue but it stayed in limp mode when I restarted the car.

I'd get it scanned for fault codes. Some fault codes don't produce an engine management warning light but still get logged on the car's ECU.
