Anyone else's cat off their food?

My tabby cat has become a very poor eater since the heatwave started. He's also moulting a pile. I've had him to the vet who couldn't find anything wrong but he's only eating when you stay with him and make a fuss of him and has lost a lot of weight. I should say he does normally lose some weight for the summer anyway but he's very thin now. He's also drinking a good bit, but he has an exclusively dry food diet at the moment. I've changed his food twice and he's now on Applaws and before that James Wellbeloved so he's getting decent food. His behaviour is normal apart from the eating or lack of it. I think I'll take him back to the vets but am just wondering if anyone else's kitty is off their food at the moment?

Yes, ours has been affected. She's eating ok first thing in the morning, but during the day if it gets really hot she just hides away somewhere cool, and comes out later in the evening for a bite to eat. Normally she'd be eating all through the day, and stop early evening, but recently she's been asking for food as late as 11pm. Have heard of other people's cats doing the same. She only eats wet food these days so I'm not too worried on that front and she's drinking enough water.

No; my three are fine and hungry. They are on raw chicken and wet canned food.

They are in and out all day so have found cooler nests.

Maybe try a change to wet food?

Think you're right - my fella will eat raw chicken till the cows come home. I'll get some wet food for him today. Thanks.

    Hi OP,

I am sorry to hear your tabby cat isn't doing well. Did the vet confirm how much weight your cat has lost and did they carry out any screening tests (blood count, urinalysis)? The hot weather and dry diet may explain the increase in thirst but the weight loss and lack of interest in food is worrying. Cats are great at hiding illnesses and your instinct to take your kitty back to the vet is spot on.
I have three cats. They have a wet and dry diet and are all eating as normal in the hot weather even the geriatric cat. I hope your vet can help your kitty get back to full health. Wishing you all the best

agree with this need for more investigations. Especially the increased thirst and weight loss. Wishing you and cat well.

No he just did the feel around, temperature and checked the teeth. He's booked in tomorrow for bloods and has just eaten a whole pouch of Felix. ☺️

Lots of baby bunnies around our way along with lots of mice, rats and shrews so our cat is eating out most of the time.

    Its the same every summer.

I think the weight loss is of greater concern here?
