need advice on calving camera

Hi, i am researching cameras for our calving shed at the moment but i have really no clue about what cameras are suitable.
We live 4 miles from the farm and we would like to view the cows at night either on a phone or laptop/tv. i have broadband here at home, there is also broadband in my in laws house which is about 80 metres from the shed.
Would i be better off getting a professional out to install a fancy system or is it possible to do it myself

As long as the system has a good app, you should'nt have a problem viewing . You will need good broadband near the recorder , lead connected from recorder to router for broadband. You can get tecordets with P2P' finds its own network. Cameras make sure they a good quality. HD or IP.

You might be as well off getting in a professional.
Is your brother in laws house in line of sight from your cow shed?
Also has he broadband there?

Ya it's in a line of sight and they have broadband

Well that makes life somewhat easier and a cheaper installation price as well. The broadband as fitted in that house can be transmitted to the cow shed via nano stations.


Speak with some installers in your own area or perhaps neighboring farmers to see who did they use and how did it go.

If you want to give it a go yourself. No guarantees, the wifi signal in the shed will need to be strong for them to work. But cheap enough to just give it a go IMO. There is even some nice controllable pan and zoom models there that might be handy for you.

If it doesn't work, you can always get a professional in then. If you do that, probably best to get ethernet cameras run from your in laws house to the shed to avoid issues with wifi strength.

from your smartphone , you can view the camera or cameras
the night vision on them is reasonable
the cameras are easy to set up

You wont need this fuction, I guess, recording..but to record you need a micro SD card

2.4GHz in a rural setting, with line of site and not much else around, might work. It would be on the edge of what is normal, no harm in trying given the low price.

You could use point to point wifi antenna:

or just run ethernet to the shed, properly protected, etc.

You would need to do extensive tests. Relying on a quick check with your phone would only be a first step.
After all farming is a business and calving can be problematic so a reliable system is essential imho.
Ethernet or a proper wireless antenna system should be installed. RF signal strength can vary even over this distance.
