    Hi
Going to Leeds to collect my 181 Ioniq next week.
Will get to dealership at 10am Sat and ferry from Holyhead at 9pm odd.

So a few questions if I may...

    Car. (2 cables supplied)
What is the latest software rev ? How to check ?
What was the last recall ? should this be stamped into the service book ?

    Travel - 265km/ 165 miles - g-maps says 3 hrs 15mins.
By motorway - best route ?
Mid-point charge ? Lymm services on M56/M6 with electrocity app. Mileage to here is 57miles & then 108 miles to holyhead.
Holyhead- ccs charger at terminal ?

Heading to Navan from boat. So a few options if need be on route.
will use Electocity app for Lymm services station.

Anything else I should note, bring, etc
    Thanks
    Karl

Make sure to get the invoice and full v5 document
    Keep travel tickets
Make sure that you are buying the car 6 months old at least from date of first registration
Make sure the car has 6k km on the clock when presenting to the VRT section.

UK charging network is much better than Ireland in terms of coverage, wales is a bit of a black spot.

Make sure to download the ecotricity app and add payment method before going.

Best of luck with it, another Meath based IOniq!!

    Just looking at ferries

    Irish ferries at 5:15pm - 2 hr
    or Stena at 8:30pm - 3hr.

If I leave leeds at noon - with 3hr drive and a charge - am I pushing it for 5pm ??

It's your first electric trip so I'd leave more time for potential hogged/broken chargers or at least have a plan B in case the original planned charger is down.

You should be able to do that drive in about 3.5 hours including the charging but if there are cars ahead of you in the queue at the chargers you might be pushing your luck.

Why don't you take the Liverpool ferry? Cheap as chips and only 75 miles from Leeds. No need to charge at all until you get home to Navan

As others have said FULL V5, ensure the invoice is dated more than 6months from registration date (July 17th) if at all possible in order to avoid VAT implications.
    Enjoy the trip

salesman has said he has dealt with Irish exports so V5 is no problem.

Will keep an eye on all dates.

It high season. I was over on Stena the other day and back on Irish Ferries....both from Rosslare....both packed.....

Get the later ferry. You can be 3 hours early, but you can't be a minute late.

Make sure they have it fully charged for you when you get there.

That's crazy. I paid €58 for the Liverpool ferry last September (booked only a few days in advance). Got a free upgrade from just a seat on inner deck to a sea view cabin, had a decent sleep, a good shower and two hot meals included

Flew to Nottingham (east midlands) at about 8PM on a Monday night (Ryanair flight about €60 one way) and was home at about 11AM

I know not car related, but how did you get a free upgrade?

    You ask or they offer?

    In September.....schools closed

We got ferry from Rosslare to Pembroke last year in September as well.....they couldn't do enough for us.....we had the ferry on both trips more or less to ourselves....

Coming back on Monday it was hard to get a seat

Irish Ferries are down a ferry at the minute (I think), so that's throwing the prices off.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 1,928 Mod ✭✭✭✭karltimber

got it one way with Direct ferries - with Stenalines for e150.

    best out there.

Got flight over for e13 so can't complain.

I'm ashamed to say the thought of asking didn't even enter my mind :o

I checked in and the lady handed me a key. I said "what's that, I didn't book any cabin", so she explained they had cabins to spare and it was a free upgrade. To my benefit, it was about 2AM and I was wrecked :p

It was P&O ferries. Just checked for the OP and the trip next week costs €103. Plus a lot less hassle not having to worry about charging abroad

V5 documents can be harder to get now with the new GDPR Compliance my mother just bought a Zoe 40 i and the garage wouldn't give it to her as it shows previous owner details. Just be aware in case it is a problem you will need Export Cert from DVLA apply straight away as there is a lead time for this.

karltimber can I ask how much the Ioniq cost? I'm constantly changing my mind about what car I'd like next.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 1,928 Mod ✭✭✭✭karltimber

Unkel - the Monday ferry is e103 but can't get that. E150 on the saturday evening from holyhead was the best option.
Have the whole day saturday to make it by 8.30pm so no hassle. Adventure !! :)

Not trying to scare you, but do you have Breakdown/recovery insurance here in Irl. and is it transferable to a new vehicle so that you're covered in the UK?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,936 ✭✭✭ewj1978

Wouldn't hyundai have breakdown (european wide)?

I don't know abt Hyundai specifically. However I know some brands are fairly seamless across Europe, others are set up as silos on a country by country basis. Car manufacturer warranties are likely to be Europe wide, but extended warranties (which are usually really just insurance policies) and breakdown cover or assist coverage are often geographically limited. Some Ts&Cs limit coverage to UK & Channel Islands on UK bought cars. Some others are worded so as to cover only UK Registered cars I.e. UK reg and keeper address).

It's all about just knowing what exactly is covered to ensure no painful surprises. So ask and be satisfied.

    EUR25k?

    That's a pretty sweet deal!

Cheapest Ioniq EV on Autotrader at the moment is GBP23k. And that's a 2016 car. I've seen the occasional 2016 and 2017 for just under GBP20k before but they are usually snapped up pretty quickly. You get the Premium SE one (leather seats) or the normal one?

one other small thing - I asked the dealership to tax the car. Becuase it's EV there is no cost associated with it, so it was not a problem. I did this to ensure that my shiney new car was not confiscated by the police between the dealership and holyhead....

Good point. I was reading the other day that there are thousands of fines each year in the UK for having no tax on cars that have free tax!

Was driving a Premium SE Ioniq today. It's a very nice place to be in with amazing spec and beautiful leather interior.

My friend imported it last week after failing to source a car in Ireland.

It's definitely the one to buy.

Hi, just an update. Went to Leeds last saturday morning. Bus from airport took longer than the flight. Then a bus out to dealership. Signed some papers, got a tour of car and handed the keys. Got the full V5 doc. Went to Lymm service station on m56/m6 junction and charged there - first time using electrocity app - all went fine (cost euro4.20). Then 2 hr drive to holyhead. got there with 30km left and charged at port. Just drive left of the wire fence. Cost of that charge - euo0.46 cent 1f642.png:). not sure why.
Have it home now 4 days - mix of navan fast charge (when available) and home. just need to change to night rate this week. vrt setup for aug. a few questions --- can I get a short cable around 1.5m long so the long cable is not touching the ground for the house charge. Car is in miles so getting 9.3 km/kwh (converted from 6.3 m/kwh). Going great so far - the questions from friends etc are unreal - amazing how little folks know about ev's and their use/range/charging. thx for all the help in prep to collect car.

Glad to hear all went smoothly. Any chance you could give us a cost breakdown roughly i.e price to have car in your front yard vs price of car if bought in Ireland?

    Congrats. You won't know yourself.

Can't offer any advice on the Ioniq.
But for the charger, why not get a tethered unit and leave most of it wound up?

Just wind the cable up at either end and tape it thus reducing the length of the cable and it will not hang on the ground anywhere...

That's a range of over 300km! Ioniq EV really is incredibly efficient, particularly during this warm summer.

    (9.3 * 28kWh usable)

Make sure you set yourself up for the toll discounts as soon as you have your Irish reg. M50 toll for EUR0.52 off peak is nice

I know this is an old thread but there seems to be some good value deals in the UK right now with the current exchange rate.
To those of you that brought back a car from the UK is there any way to access the public chargers here without having an EV?

If I go to register on the Ecars website it asks for a vechile reg and a utility bill wheras in the UK you just download an app and use you credit card. Why does everything in Ireland have to be so much harder?

It's just if I were to bring a car back I would need to charge between the ferry and home.

You can ring ecars 24/7 from any charger and they'll start it for you. Or just use an rfid bank card. That's what I did for the first few weeks.

and use 01 2583799 instead of the 1850 number on the chargers to save yourself some money

You can get the same card from ecars Northern Ireland without the need to supply proof of ownership.

So after a lot of deliberation and reading these threads I purchased a demo Ioniq from the Uk during the week.
So its a silver Premium Se with 8k miles bought from a dealer in North London.
Flew to Stansted and got the Liverpool- Dublin ferry back.
The whole process was pretty straight forward except for a couple of faulty chargers on the route, one in the UK and one here.
Plan is to do 75% of my charging at work and the rest at home, I have an electrician coming during the week to install my charger.

Thanks to all the posters on this forum, there really is great information on here.
So if anyone is considering doing something similar feel free to ask questions.
