Is the cost of the Golf R unreasonable for its category?

I think I mean it's very expensive for a brand that isn't luxury....

I steered based on reading reviews - if you like the manufacturer why not just go for the audi?

    Thanks.

The a3 always seemed very bland to me though.

I had to google the costs to buy one.
    2.0 TSI 230HP GTI 3 dr € 38,195
    2.0 TFSI 310HP R DSG 4WD 3 dr € 47,050

    https://www.volkswagen.ie/en/models/golf-r1.html
    From €45,250

Seems ok for an "extreme performance" car that will cost you an arm and a leg to insure anyway..

I hate 3drs but the car does really need the 230bhp - 150 doesn't cut it on mine.

think i got the right option then with the 5dr anyway...5drs over power

do you find that 3dr hatchbacks look like short wheel base transits?

Oh i do find it looks like a transit!!
    I find the 5dr looks like a Boeing 747!
Are you for real? Guessing troll

Because an equivalent performing Audi is even more expensive

The Golf R is priced pretty much identical to it's rivals.

OP, your comparing apples with oranges.

A Golf R (assuming your not talking about the R Line trim on an ordinary Golf) is the halo performance model of the Golf range. It's not a luxury car or aimed at the A3 buyer. The closest equivalent from Audi would be the S3. Now go spec and price a S3 and see how much more a similar one costs over a Golf R.

No problem mate if your being serious. There is no way a 3dr Golf R looks like a short wheel Transit no matter what way you look at it/each to their own rubbish.
    Welcome

I don't really understand the question. Is it an expensive VW/Golf. Yes absolutely it is.

"If you like the manufacture go for the audi?" What does that mean?

Two ways of looking at it.

It is an expensive Golf. Sure you would be mad to spend 50k on a Golf.....

    or

It's the cheapest way to get into a 4wd, sub 5s to 60, 300+bhp car that has plenty of refinement/luxury/gadgets.

In response to another post, insurance isn't expensive on them either.

If the pricing was all wrong they wouldn't sell. Your question is a bit silly OP.

Because an Audi S3 starts at 50k€.
    A Golf R starts at 45k€

Both with 310HP and 4WD. The Audi is 5 door, though.

A 152 over on DD for €30k is a big hit in 3 years. Can't see any S3s

In % terms it's not that bad.

jaysus lads, the hatches are fine - i just don't like the 3drs and that is my own feelings on it.

That price is poking at the s3....I said I do recall reading somewhere that there is no good reason to buy a golf r....and there isn't really any good reason to buy....VW want you to move to an Audi and that makes sense in my personal lay opinion.

I agree, it's still a performance car with all the gimmicks though. I would have thought it might hold its value a bit better.

The A3's start at about 37k I believe.....that 30k may be 28500? That's not bad at about 3300 euro per year I think

    An A3 isn't an S3 though. Like a Golf R isn't a Golf.

I priced both a Golf R and an S3 with similar spec in the past couple of months. The Golf was 48k, I stopped speccing the S3 when it got to 60k and it was still missing some stuff that was on the 48k Golf. They both have the same engine, transmission and drivetrain. So to me the question is, why would you buy an S3 when you can get the Golf with significantly more spec for cheaper.

Did you spec any other manufacturers in the same price range?

€21k for an entry 1 litre Golf which isn't comparable to a Golf R

Trying to understand your point here. Is it the way you're shopping with a set budget and looking for ideas?

This lad is definitely a troll or really hasn't a clue.
Doesn't seem to know that a S3 is not the same as a basic A3.
I'm done can't cope with this anymore.

OP, do you fully understand what you are talking about?

The golf is cheaper than the Audi, that’s why you would buy it.
Maybe your question should be, why would you buy the S3 over the R.

Badge snobbery perhaps? Saying to be got an Audi as opposed to a Golf

On a serious note would you think of a Yaris Verso. Great space and a real goer with the autodigi box. It may solve your problems.
