Engine oil for Mazda 3?

    Hi. Does anyone know what engine oil I need for a 1.6 petrol 2007 Mazda3? I see different types recommended online: 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-40


    Are they all compatible, good? Thanks.

    I'd say 5w30 fully is the must Common

    Personally I’d use 5w40, higher viscosity for an older engine. There’s more educated people then me on here that might tell you another thing though.

    5W30 fully synthetic A3/A4 spec is generally good for most petrols (or else 5W40 fully synthetic or even 10W40 semi synthetic if it's using oil, as that will help reduce the oil consumption).

    I think those Ford engines (which the Mazda has) are fairly fussy about the particular type of oil they need. See what the owner's manual says.

    Unnecessary IMO. 5W30 fully synth would be more than enough. It’s unlikeky that the car has been getting 0w40 through its life. If it’s anything like the 1.6 in the mother’s old 323 it’ll just burn it anyway. Is it a Ford unit in the 3?

    I did some googling there on manuals. Found one that recommends 5w20 and if that's not available then 5w30.

    0 viscosity when cold is unnecessary in Ireland IMO, it doesn't get that cold here.

    I thought those first generation 3s used the Ford Sigma engine (same as the Focus), but Wikipedia disagrees with me. Odd because the Volvo S40, and other cars which are based on that second generation Focus platform, do use the Ford engines.

    I think you may be thinking of the Mazda2 which had Sigma engines, but only because the examples we got were built in Valencia along with the Fiesta. The Mazda3's we got were built in Japan. Their diesel engines of the time were Ford/PSA units.

    It is not necessary - but it greatly improves fuel efficiency, especially when doing a lot of shorter trips.

    Nevertheless, the happy ground IMHO is Total Quartz 5W40 - €30 for 5l at MicksGarage. Very good oil, with BMW LL-01 approval for very little money.
    There is also Total Quartz 9000 Future NFC 5W30 for same money - but I am not really convinced with the reduced HTHS in the A5/B5 oils.
