Sparrows taking over Swallows nests

We have had swallows nesting in our apartment building for a good few years with the number of nests increasing over the years.
This year seemed to be as per normal with the arrival of the swallows in early May and the rebuilding/repairing of their nests.
However just this week we have noticed that a couple of the nests no longer seems to have any chicks in it and one had what looked like a dead swallow chick on the ground beneath it. Instead of swallows in those nests there are sparrows and they seem to be very protective of the nests.
    Is this normal behavior?
Did the sparrows take over an empty nest or were they responsible for emptying it?
I have heard before that crows sometimes destroy the nests to get at vulnerable chicks but surprised at this by sparrows

House sparrows often take over nearby swallow nests and bluetit boxes.
