New driver - renting a car in Spain

    Hi Boards!

    I'm a relatively new driver (just over 6 months on my licence) and I'm planning a trip to Spain later this year.

    Am I able to rent a car over there? I've been told that if you've been driving less than 2 years a lot of companies won't let you rent a car.

    Would appreciate any guidance or recommendations!

    I think it's a requirement to hold it for more than a year with all rental companies.

    Never heard of that rule. A full license is a full license. Then again I wouldn't be surprised...


    Generally they want to know your age, and charge a premium if you're young. For example when looking for cars through www.rentalcars.com, if you enter a date of 18, it won't find any cars. If you enter an age of 20, it does find cars but an extra fee is charged.

    Your best bet would be to contact several car hire companies based at the airport you are flying into. If you can hire a car maybe organise excess insurance here. Some of the hire companies charge a ridiculous excess amount.Also be aware most hires are full to full ie you pick up the car full of fuel and you need to leave it back full. If you don't there is a hefty fueling fee. Good luck.

    New license holders are required to drive with Novice plates on the car here for a period of time so obviously there is some distinction. So looks like rental companies follow some sort of baselines too probably dictated by their insurance carriers.

    Always wise to check terms and conditions pretty sure thers a minimum licence held period with most of them if ther is always an option with the small independent crowds cars we used one in Italy for couple of days hire no hidden charges and didn't care if ther was a tiny scratch on it
