Extending a house, don't know where to start

So, I bought a 2 bed terraced house, with a small extension to the back already existing, in November. The current extension is not the greatest quality (whistling windows, very hard to open stuck door)

We have a very large back garden and I would like to extend out the back again. The current idea is to extend the current extension, replace the backwall/windows/doors & extension roof. Add an extra utility room and another bathroom and add some backyard decking. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

Here comes my problem, I have no idea where to start or what sort of people to even contact to validate these ideas. Not looking for individual recommendations (yet), just an understanding of how this can get done. Could somebody point me in the direction of what the normal process is?

Consider knocking the current extension. And envisage what that would mean if you had a blank slate from there.

I would consider everything and anything. All I have are ideas right now but who do I take those ideas to? An architect? A surveyor? A builder? A jack of all trades? (If there is no planning permission needed)

Get an architect, that's what we did in your situation.

If your in a terrace, you need to carefully consider the ‘light’. It’s essential to get the best layout connecting the living/family/kitchen space, where you spend most of your time, with views of the garden

    +1
in other words if you over extend the original house will be dark and dreary with limited natural light

Yeah, we are hoping to only extend out on half the side and put in sliding window doors on the other half.

For anybody who has gone through it before, have you done everything through an architect or sourced everybody yourself?

Do you know people in the trade?
I'm in the process of renovating and we went with an architect who will also manage the build process.
We are clueless and wanted it done ASAP.
The problem with this method though is it's by far more expensive than doing it yourself.
