You read a lot about people scouring estates for cars to steal.

    Keyless entry is a Risk.

Any ways of blocking the signal?

You can get a pouch to put your key into. That’s if you’re worry8ng about them somehow grabbing the signal from your key.

An old broken unplugged microwave would suffice (with door closed).
Could also be used to store all other small electronics, in event of one of those aul defcon1 situations.

You can buy a mobile phone signal blocker pouch from ebay that you can put your keys into. I have one and it works perfectly.

Get yourself a key protection pouch. Plenty on eBay. I got one for mine last week. I don't have keyless entry but keyless start. Put the key in the pouch. Sat in the car with the pouch and nada. Even with the key in the car with the pouch the car couldn't read it.

I was followed today and I reckon they were trying to find out where the car “lived”

They do them in Halfords too, they also work.

Alternatively, put the keys in a Ziploc bag and place the bags in the fridge. Apparently, that's what Edward Snowden had journalists do with their mobiles when he met them.

Any metal box or cage will form a Faraday cage and no signals will get through.

Same protection from a €1 tin box with tinfoil.

OP what sort of car do you have?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,058 ✭✭✭✭anewme

One of the marques that would be a target unfortunately.

even the signal repeaters don't work at great distance so putting the keys in the side of your house furthest away from the car, getting a motion activated flood light for the driveway and a cctv camera is a good idea to deter thieves.

Do you really need it, keyless entry is what gives them access. Or do they have a way to get entry on a keyless start car?

Technically No. But I had purchased the pouches as the car I was gonna buy was keyless entry then at the very last minute changed the car purchase. But since I have them I may as well use them. Like condoms...better safe then sorry.

They can work from over half a kilometre away.

where'd you get that from ? even most of the cctv videos show lads waving panel antennas on long poles near upstairs windows to try get a signal from the key.

    Jaysus.

I think I'd just stick with an ordinary key.

just get the walk up and unlock feature turned off in the car, you can still use the unlock button on the key and this won't impact you.

I have had Porsche, Merc AMG and BMW M cars and would never dreamt of car been robbed by somebody intercepting the keyfob. If they want the car they will just smash your door in and take the keys.

Honestly unless you have something very exotic then I would not worry to much.

Good recommendations alright but does not cover other situations e.g. targeting in a car park.

    Thanks.

I’m worried because I definitely was followed off motorway and there’s no reason only car by a dodgy looking guy. I went down a country lane and he followed. It rattled me a bit.

The key fob is lesser of two evils. I’d hate to think someone would come in after the keys. That happened to me in 09.

The car is not anything exotic, in fact it’s pretty standard, type they would go for to steal as there’s loads.

So as a test, I wrapped the two keys in tinfoil and into a tin box.

The car would not unlock even with the box beside the door.

    That works so.

You could have done it with either the tin foil or box. Both was overkill.

Not a great effort to use a bit of tin foil and wrap it up so no harm done.

On some cars if you lock them with the button on the fob, it disables the keyless entry.

You can only unlock with the button on the fob.

Try it and see if it applies to your car

Depends on the box, lid fitting tightly etc as well as hinges. Tinfoil in the box is a belt and braces. Tinfoil alone can easily tear with handling or in pocket.

Tried that already, did not work.

My concern was that I was followed and I assumed it was someone after the car. I have since found out there have been a number of incidents of people being followed, more or less in the same circumstances, so it may be something different altogether.

    Here’s my solution

On my Nissan if you leave a keyfob in the car, you can't lock it using the button on the door handle and it makes lots of annoying beeping sounds if you try to.
