Hi all I'm wondering is it possible to top up the air con myself in my 2011 insignia? Has anyone tried it?
If I was to get it done by a garage how much do ya think it would cost?
    Thanks for all the help.

I've done DIY top ups using stuff I bought from Halfords but it was worth my while spending around €90 on the stuff I used as I was minding a small fleet of vehicles.

For a "one off" refill, your probably best going to Fast Fit / First Stop / Kwik Fit as they recharge a system from around €50. That's cheaper than buying the kit that I did.

A garage local to me offer an air service for €75 which includes a gas top up. Not sure if that expensive or not.

I was looking a few weeks ago, top up was €70 from someone who came highly recommended.
The pressure was at 0psi and I had a hole in the rad so he couldn't fill it. Got a new rad fitted and ended up spending €120 to get the whole thing vacuumed and filled. Think he said it was 550g of gas went into it.
Ended up costing €300, I wasn't gonna bother but the first day it was done was a dream to drive around in this weather. I've a few long motorway spins in the next few weeks so really glad I spent the money.

Anything under €100 is generally a good deal.

You're always better off getting the proper service. They put a vacuum on the system to remove all the old gas and replace it with new gas, lubricant for the compressor and a dye to help find future leaks.

The system would generally have 10 bar pressure. The top ups while sometimes work won't get you there.

...on the hot side, the cold side that those DIY kits connect to is around 2 bars with temp in high teens. Ambient in high 20'sC would have the hot and cold side pressures a lot higher!

I also recommend this guy. Has the right equipment and seems to know how to use it.
