VW Tiguan

    Hi all,
Just looking for advise/guidance for my aunt & her son. They currently drive a saloon car and have a jeep to tow horse box for occasional outings at weekends etc. in summer.
Both vehicles are old (over 14 years) so they are considering replacing both vehicles with a dual purpose one (used not new).
At the moment they have the VW Tiguan at the top of their list.
They are worried about the towing capacity of the Tiguan, could it handle a box with 2 average size horses ?
Almost all of the used Tiguans available here in Ireland are 110 BHP front wheel drive only - whereas 150 BHP and 170 BHP are available in UK, some with all wheel drive (4x4)
Considering that their average annual milage is 16,000 miles and less than 800 miles of this will be towing horse box should the standard 110 BHP be OK
As I have no knowledge of this vehicle any help would be greatly appreciated............salesmen in garages seem to tell them what they want to hear
    Thanks all. M.

    Tiguan is not a jeep.
What they should be looking at is jeeps.
    So Pajero, Land Cruiser etc.

What about a dacia duster or a qashqai?

Pajero and Land Cruisers aren't Jeeps either. They're full-size SUVs.

Also, the OP stated that they want to replace their "Jeep" and their saloon car with something in the middle, so they're aware that a Tiguan isn't a full-size SUV and are literelly asking if something that size will still be enough.

    @OP:
Do the math. How big and heavy a horse box do you have? Is it just the two horses, or will there be other stuff in the trailer as well? Assuming your horse box is 750kg and your horses are 600 kg each, you're looking at 2000kg to tow. Depending on the Tiguan in question you'll have about 1800-2500kg towing capacity (braked):

So for quite a few versions of the Tiguan this would actually be illegal, for others it would be very close to the legal limit.

Personally I wouldn't want to tow 2 tons in a car that weights 1600kg and doesn't even have 4WD/AWD.

Jesus, the OP is asking a well written question, whether the generic ‘jeep’ term is correct or not, I think it’s pretty clear what they are talking about.

Whatever you do don't go over to the 'vacuuming' forum :D

Could possibly think about the Touareg. They are a bigger and would be much more comfortable towing that kind of weight

Thanks all for replies and thanks Wildcard 7 for link it's very helpful.
The jeep they have at the moment is a SWB Mitsubishi Pajero - it's a 2.5 or 2.8 L I think. (I refer to all 4x4's as jeeps for some reason !)
After reading Wildcard 7's link, as a complete novice, I would guess that the 170 or 190 BHP with all wheel drive would suit, it should work out more economical than running two vehicles with the Pajero parked up 95% of the time. Thanks again M.

The issue is guards are checking weights of trailers and legal towing capacity of the vehicle in front more often so you need to find out plating on the trailer and the horse sizes. Personally I'd prefer something substanial in front of animals so would look to see would there be landcruiser, pajero, discovery type 4×4 within budget. An alternative would be buy a car and then hire a truck to carry the horses whenever if it's not very often.
