    Quick question...asking for a friend

Both cars are the same price approx €26k
2018 Kona is 1 litre petrol
2017 Sportage is 1.7 diesel (26,000km on the clock)

Average commute is 20km per day with a 750km round trip to Kerry every 2 months.

Is it a no brainer to go with the Sportage?

What's the spec on them? Is there anything they'd like that the Kona doesn't have? I believe the Sportage is a bigger model. Do they have any particular needs?

Petrol all the way. A diesel would be impractical at 20km a day. I wouldn't worry about the odd long trip, a petrol will still get decent economy on a long trip.

The Sportage is from the segment above the Kona and is the sister car of the Tucson so is bigger than the Kona but is also an older design. Kia's equivalent to the Kona is the Stonic, both are mechanically the same vehicle.

    Kona is mid spec
    Sportage is high spec.

The Sportage does have a full panoramic sunroof which is a big plus and its bigger size means a bigger boot which is also a bonus.

My friend is of an older generation and is very much about "what other people think" and that's why they feel they need to buy new... to impress friends and family.

Both dealers are offering the same trade in amount on the current car.

I'm trying to help them see that a 2nd hand car is not a dirty thing!

The Stonic is also being considered and its coming in €3k cheaper.

Did he look at anything else, maybe a Toyota CHR?

The CHR is out of the price range new and not many 2nd hand SOL models knocking around.

As mentioned before the entry level spec cars just won't be considered due to delusions of grandeur!

The main difference is 615 mm... Kona is tiny compared to Sportage.

No. Kona will be much easier to live in a crowded city.

My advice however is not to give advice to a friend. Unless you don't want to remain friends...

Believe it or not but the Arona isn't being considered cos it felt cheap on the inside.

How about a Seat Ateca, Skoda Karoq or even the Opel Grandland X? All lovely cars. By the way you can not use the touchscreen or radio in the Sportage if the car is turned off. Really annoying that. If She or he really wants a car to impress do then get the Peugeot 3008 in Red or blue. It's a stunning car and the class leader. It makes everything else look boring and old.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Thanks for all of the replies guys. They went for the highest spec they could find and bought a 172 Sportage Demo model.
