    Hello boardies,

Title says it all, I have been with my GF for 7 years ( living together for 4 ) and we have a toddler. We have been living in my property for the past 3 years, I bought it in my name only. I know recent co-habit laws have been mandated however I cannot seem to get much insight into them.

We are now separating and I am concerned on whether she is entitled to half of my property like she would be in a divorce ? Any feedback is much appreciated.

    Regards,
    Alan

This link is a good starting point. http://www.citizensinformation.ie/en/birth_family_relationships/cohabiting_couples/property_rights_and_unmarried_couples.html

I think that maybe the case, in lots of circumstances. But have a look at citizens advice for more info, they are online and email.

Moderation: Thread re-opened for discussion purposes. OP, you should have a quick look at the charter for Legal Discussion and note the general rule against legal advice.

As mentioned above, Citizens Information have a relatively easy to use guide on the rights/obligations of unmarried and co-habiting couples.

Things aren't as simple as baldly asserting that one party gets half of the property (that isn't even the case with marriage breakdowns), the law takes into account the individual circumstances of the parties and any future needs they may have.

Sell up before you break up. And spend all your money, or at least tuck it under your side of the mattress. Problem solved :)
