promotion with car allowance?

So I have been given a promotion in work and the new role includes a car allowance (which I have never had where I work before)

Now the job entails little or no travel normally so I am wondering basically is this something that is free money (obviously after taxation) and its just separate from my salary so any future salary increments will be just on my base salary?

    Thanks

Where I work have car allowance is taxed as normal income but is excluded from pension percentage, bonus, redundancy, and shift allowance. A way keeping costs down.
