Dogs on Beaches

On most beaches in Clare there is a ban on dogs between 11am and 6 pm.
Recently on Kilkee beach there was a virtual parade of dog by their owners between these hours.
A number of parents with children who were afraid of dogs approached some of the owners but, were politely "told where to go"
Clare Co Co were contacted but, as of yet , not even a reply.
Why bother making rules or putting up signs if there is no method of enforcing them.

There should be a ban on kids on beaches between those hours too.

    ban humas too

There wouldn't need to be a ban if all dog owners were responsible, not just letting Bonzo off to run and shyte everywhere unsupervised.

People just get dogs now as an 'accessory' or because the kid(s) want one, usually around Xmas. That ends well.

Surely that ban is only for dogs off the leash?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,310 ✭✭✭✭Grandeeod

I'd consider banning some humans too.

The signs on the beach say "NO DOGS" between 11 AM and 6 PM with a sign depicting a dog with an "X" on it.

Personally I think the ban should be extended to before 11 AM.
With a receding tide, dogs foul the beach before 11 and it stays there until the next full tide.
However as the authorities seem unable to enforce an 11 AM ban , there is no chance of a pre 11 ban.

what about the owners who clean up after their dogs? Why are they the ones punished?

    You obviously dont mind

    (a) having a child terrified or
    (b) have them mixing dog poop with sand while playing on the beach..

Afraid of dogs.. it's a growing epidemic amongst kids these days. If you child has a fear of dogs you should fix the fear not ban dogs.

I do get your point though. If there’s a ban, it should be enforced.

Irresponsible dog owners should be fined but most dogs are quite well behaved. And most dog owners pick up their dirt. A few more bins around might encourage a few more people to do so

Last time I took my do to the beach I went at sunset, and as well as a bag of poo I picked up a load of crisp packets and drink cartons to put in the bin too.

If the dog is on the lead then an owner will not be bringing the dog to any child. If a child is afraid of a dog thats nowehere near them then they why should dog owners be punished.

Dog owners that leave their ****e are fined. That should be enforced. I know plenty of dog owners who carry poop bags. Humans wreck the beach more than dogs with their rubbish

If nobody's there to enforce it, the sign is pointless. Irish don't do rules.

Appologies but if your child is afraid of dogs thats your issue. If your child had an irrational fear of black people should they also be banned from beaches?

Its all a bit annoying really. I walk the beach with my dog all year round. Ive never had and hassle and cleaned up after myself. Most of the people you see all year round on the beach are dog walkers. We get a couple of weeks of sun and the great unwashed arrive out and expect everything to disappear for them.

Where's the lager louts and their sprogs when me and the dog are walking the beach in the freezing rain in November, rescuing Fulmars from plastic 5 gallon drums and keeping the rabbits exercised?

    Ban them I say.

A dog ban in any public place has no basis except some bureaucrat's personal squeamishness about dogs.

There are plenty of rules in place already to deal with fouling and out of control dogs. A ban is pointless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,556 ✭✭✭Macy0161

A lot of the time you don't see the dog crap, as the owners think it's helpful to bury it a couple cm's down. The whole off the leads bit (not just on the beach) is just a convenient excuse for not picking up, as they "didn't see them doing it".

Like dogs just rock up to the beach after having driven 20km to get there and start shyting all over the beach?

Are the signs clear? I lived in London for seven years and in all that time I never used an escalator on the tube. The signs said "Dogs must be carried". As I didn't have a dog I thought I was prohibited from using the escalators without one. I thought everyone else was just ignoring the rule! I must say though, I was fit from climbing the stairs every day.

As for dogs on beaches, I have no problem with them as long as their owners keep them under control.

Like so many things, such laws are brought in due to the irresponsible ones. People who let their dogs crap wherever and don't pick up. People who let their dogs loose where loads of people are etc. It can be difficult to outlaw specific things pertaining to the dog, so they just go with a simple catch all. If you have a dog on the beach, we don't have to prove anything, you are breaking the law by simply having the dog there.

I live right at a park, and have a dog mad daughter, so I see a spectrum of Dog owners. From the very considerate, to innocently ignorant to the absolutely obnoxious and irresponsible. Dogs in irresponsible hands are dangerous. The 'dangerous' dogs in irresponsible hands even more so. I've seen Akita's off the lead mauling a local cat with the owner completely unable to control it, and that same owner telling an old couple to 'f**k off and mind your own business' when they asked him to lead the dogs, especially around children.
People don't want that aggravation. So due to such ignorant, irresponsible morons, these frustrating for many 'catch all' laws come in. They do penalise responsible owners, but I do understand why they introduce such laws.

Dogs on beaches are the best thing ever. I’m not a dog owner so that’s not a defensive statement. I’m saying it because it’s true.

and why is it not working? I grew up by the beach and easily go to the beach 40+ times a year. I have never seen the rule enforced

I don't overly care what happens in wet November but I don't think banning dogs from beaches when they are crowded is unreasonable. Maybe a small Fifi is ok but a larger dog should be kept away. I say that as an owner of a large dog.

Id love to see the actual bye law for this.

Zero chance of it ever being enforced or any prosecution succeeding out of it.

    Waste of time

With regard to the provision of bins:

I don't agree that the provision of more bins is a solution. More bins = more rubbish will then be left to be dealt with and the bins will never be managed properly anyway - left overflowing, not emptied on bank holiday weekends etc.

I am getting ready for the inevitable onslaught of a backlash here, but if I go anywhere for a picnic, I manage to bring all my stuff with me and strangely enough, I can always manage to bring the remaining rubbish back home with me too. It's my waste and my problem to deal with.

I don't expect anyone else to provide bins, manpower, or money to clear up after me. Is there no personal pride and responsibility these days?. If you bring it with you, you can take it back too and that includes dog poo.

In fairness dog s**t smells like dog s**t. It's not the nicest thing to carry in the car. There needs to be bins.

A significant amount of black people don't end up being kept as pets by toerags who let them run around biting people and other pets or sh1tting everywhere, unless I've missed something

Again, its not my fault a child has a fear. That is the parent and child issue and while I sympathies with it i shouldn't have to change my behaviour because of your fear.

If a man with a beard approaches your child and talks to him, you rightly warn your child to stay away from similar people. You don't ban all men with beards from anywhere that my be in the vicinity of your child art any time.

If my child is afraid of heights, I don't demand a height restriction on all buildings.

Its not enforced because its a bull**** law. It rarely affects people. We get a heatwave and all of a sudden people expect a staff of people to be employed to solve a problem that they perceive for a heatwave that only happens once every 30 years.
