Is there an NCT moratorium?

    Hi all,
Had hoped to have changed my car before now but am very fussy (some posters, no doubt are sick of me in the motor thread!). Anyway, I'm facing the NCT this week and fully expect Louie to fail. The NCT is up next week and a neighbour mentioned today that she thinks one has a month to fix the car. I'm going to see what the cost is and if it's not crazy will spend until Louie is replaced. Is there a moratorium (as such) or is the car def off the road when the NCT expires? I'm allergic to the guards so want to do everything by the book.

No there's not. You can NCT the car 3 months in advance so you have time to fix it. When it's out, it's out. Put it through and see what happens I reckon.

Gardai are human. If its only a couple of weeks out I wouldn't worry.

Best to have a printout of an appointment with you.

    Wishful thinking! Thanks Alanstrainor

No, I freeze when I see the Guards-and I'm completely lawabiding. Not worth the panic. Will test, repair if necessary or buy/borrow replacement.

I once got pulled for speeding with NCT out by 3 days (I had only noticed that morning - I can’t remember if I had made a booking or not).

Guard told me id be getting 3 points and fine for the speeding and checked my disks, but said nothing about the NCT. Could have easily ended up with 6 points that day.

Got lucky, but not something I want to repeat!

You can only get one set of points per stop so two 3 point offenses become 3 points total or one two and one 3 would be 3 points etc

Im fairly sure if there are multiple offences carried out at the same time, all carrying penalty points, you will only receive points for the highest value offence at the time.

So if you were caught speeding by a Garda (3 points) and had a bald tyre (2 points), you would only have to take 3 points in total for both offences but you will still pay the fines for both.

    Interesting.

In my case, he didn't even comment on the NCT being out, and I didn't get a fine for it.

Funny that there's no mention of that policy on the penaltypoints.ie website, or the Citizens Information page on Penalty Points.

I did find it on an archived page from the Garda website that doesn't seem to be available any more:
If it has been alleged that you have committed multiple Penalty Point offences in the same incident, only the highest value Penalty Points will be recorded on your driving licence record, e.g. if you pay two FCN for having "Crossed a Continuous White Line", which carries 1 Penalty Point on payment, and "Failure to Wear a Safety-Belt", which carries 2 Penalty Points on payment, in the same incident, you will receive 2 Penalty Points for that incident.

I wonder why it's not mentioned anywhere any more?

Yup only one set of points, but I think they may need to be related to the same thing?

ie: speeding whilst overtaking, is 2 offences, but linked together, so 1 set of points

    Vs

Speeding with no NCT are 2 different offences not linked together
