    Hi
I bought a uk reg Jeep and it was left in a village accross from a pub by seller for me as I wasn't around to meet him. It was there for around 5 weeks It wasn't blocking the road or anything. But now the guards have taken it?
Is this legal or does anyone have info on it?
    Thanks

Legally you need to register UK Reg after 1 day after purchase so it may be related to that.

Abandoned on foreign plates - you can't argue with that.

Ye I was thinking that. I bought it off a lad but there was a issue with log book so I had to contact uk motor crowd and send off a form waiting to see can I get it in my name. Headache

The pub owner is tight with the guards he asked them to take it away.

Of course they can, the car was abandoned on a public road?
They see a car sitting on a public road, not registered in the state and the owner can't be traced, what did you think was going to happen?

30 days to register it :
All motor vehicles in the State, other than those brought in temporarily by visitors, must be registered within 30 days of the date they first arrive in the state.

Which, by the way, is less than 5 weeks

Sucks but I don't think you'll have any choice but to pay up, that's assuming you can now prove you own it.

    :(

Yeah, do that. In the garda compound. Extra bonus points if you set a few of the other cars alight as well. The gardai will thank you for creating the space.

Out of curiosity what was it?

Cheap enough to walk away from?

It was a 7 seater Pajero 95 spotless clean. I wanted it as to insure as a classic and for light off-roading

Paid 700 for it. Could be less hassle to leave that cant

I actually don't know what would happen if you just left it to be honest.
Have you spoken to the gards already? Do they know who you are?

It's a nice car for a bit of playing but it's not going to be got on the road cheaply. If I had to guess the VRT will be more than you paid for it, and that's before it's been taxed

Good news is though you should get it insured for about 300 quid.

Wild guess here, but can you take it out of the impound if you organise a tow truck. Proving ownership and the whole English reg might be a issue do

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,235 ✭✭✭✭Cee-Jay-Cee

It was most likely lifted as it had no tax/MOT and parked in a public place. They don't need any other reason. Once you can prove ownership (which I'm guessing you cant and wont be able to) they'll release it to you upon payment of €125 plus storage fees for every day its in the compound. Cut your losses and forget about it.

geez that adds up pretty quickly for a 700 euro car!

not to mention potential VRT fines :(

In a similar situation for getting towed from a car park after sitting there a few weeks, but the car is registered in your name but not worth much, will you get billed for storage if they decide to crush it?
