I currently own a 2013 Volkswagen CC GT 177bhp but it's air condition compressor has given up the ghost. €510 to replace. Also needs a service (~€300). And I can't really afford these at present!

When I bought I was doing 35+km/ year but now bearly doing 20k. So thinking of getting hybrid/electric or petrol.

Only have budget of what I can sell cc for so guessing 14000. Would like to go up a couple of years but still keep some perks like cruise control, Sat nav, heated seats etc.

So looking at 2014/2015 Mazda 3, Golf, Mondeo, focus

So what would you do sell or keep?

I'm afraid it's very unlikely you will get 14k for a 2013 CC, there is another thread here where the OP is trying to sell a similar car and has struggled with a lower asking price. Also if your only justification to change is because you cannot afford to fix and service the CC then I cannot see how spending money on another car will change anything. A newer car will need servicing too and possible repairs at some stage.

    Edit, this is the thread:

That and I know it's been a particularly hot few weeks but you don't really "need" the air con compressor. If you leave the air con switched off the car will be fine without it, you just won't get ice cold air when you set the temp to cold, so all you actually need is a service.

@bazz26 comment is spot on. It will be veeeery difficult to sell the car in this condition. What's more it is the infamous VW diesel.

Service it at independent garage - the basic service should not cost you more than €150. And keep driving it and accept the A/C will never work again (if you leave it dormant too long, the corrosion kicks in and it is impossible to fix with sane money).

Thanks everyone maybe it's just the heat of the car getting to me last couple of weeks. It's just extremely annoying and uncomfortable to drive a nice car but melt inside it cause a/c won't work or else let down windows to let air circulate but then be unable to listen to radio etc!

    Who diagnosed the failed compressor?
I just fixed the A.C. in my wife's Golf with an 85 euro pressure switch. Same symptoms as a failed compressor.

I went into local garage/car dealers yesterday to get gas refilled thinking that was the problem. They said they'd check the air conditioning first and within a few mins had come back to say the compressor was broken and would cost 510 to buy and fit.

    Get a second opinion.

If its a Delphi AC Compressor then the shear plates are known to go bad on these.

If you look down at the compressor the centre bolt may be missing or loose and this is what causes in the splines on the shear plate to strip away.

If the bolt is missing or loose, its worth a shot and is a fairly simple job, (remove drivers wheel and arch liner and open the three bolts on the shear plate and stick on a new one).

I have one of the shear plates here, It was on my car for a day but in the end I needed the compressor changed as it had more damage internally.

You can have it for €20 if you want to chance it.
Or you can get one new from x8r in the UK for £30 + shipping

Worst case scenario if you don need to replace the compressor I got a brand new genuine Sanden compressor on ebay for €180 so if your not in a hurry you can pick them up cheap enough.
