I have been out of work for a number of years (Over 2) and been struggling very badly with my mental health. I am now living at home with my parents (Both retired) and trying to get back on my feet.

I want to apply for JSA. I have only recently just started trying to find work. Given that I am over 25 and both my parents are retired, is their income still take into account when calculating what level of JSA I would be entitled to? If so, would I need to provide documentation?

Secondly, was wondering how invasive or personal these meetings with Deciding Officer is? Honestly, I am pretty low mentally and feel terrible and ashamed about the state I am in and don't think I could really handle an invasive or hard kind of interview when claiming. Would probably upset me.

Thanks for any answers or experiences.

    Best,
    Cathal

A follow-up question I forgot to ask originally.

To what length do they go about contact your last employer, if anyone knows? I used to work at a bar and the place has changed ownership since I worked there with the original owner passing on. I presume social welfare people will not contact them?

Once you're aged 25 or over your parents' income will not be taken into account for your means assessment.

The interview will be based on fact finding. The DO needs to satisfy him/her self that you're genuinely available for work, fit for work and actively seeking work. Almost inevitably the question regarding what you have been up to for the past few years will arise, so be prepared for it and have an answer ready. If you have been under medical supervision, it would be useful to have a note from your doctor confirming that in his/her opinion you are now fit for work.

    Good luck.
