I think I may have bricked my Dell XPS laptop.

I tried updating my firmware, but it has just stopped and will not turn off or do anything but still shows the screen.

    Any hope?

    how old is the laptop
you can try the bios recovery options from dell call tech support and tell them what happened they will if your out of warranty try and help
if they come back and say you need a board and the laptop is less then 6 years old come back and ill tell you what to do

The laptop is three years old and is out of warranty.

It went through the check, the went to a command window with Intel firmware update utility Vs 9.5.14.1724 on the screen in the command window, but all activity is frozen.

Holding the off switch for 20 seconds would normally turn it off, but nothing.

    Thanks for your help.

    The good news.

I closed the lid and noticed the keyboard back lights went off and so reopened the lid which had 'Shutting Down' on the screen, so I waited for it to tun off and turned on, but no joy, and there was a hissing coming from the speakers so tried to turn it off, and no joy so closed the lid. A few minutes later the noise stopped.

I tried to power up and - low and behold it started up and all was well.

Great. Thanks for your encouragement - it is appreciated.

Now the real problem is the the original charger has gone pop. I tried a non Dell one which I have and the laptop refuses to charge, but does run with the charger connected. I thought the firmware upgrade would fix it - but no.

Is there any way of getting a non-Dell charger to work?

The non-Dell is the same voltage and about three times the power. The original has no output and no LED showing, but makes a sound when power is applied. It is dead.

call dell tell them the charger is not working they will give you the out of warranty and ask for a call ref
ill pm you an email when you have the ref email this person and tell them you are going to go to the small claims court or they can replace the charger you will have a new charger by the end of the week for free
