10 miles as a novice

I used to do a lot of running before kids (8 years ago) but have let the fitness slide and am fairly unfit at the moment.

I have recently started running again, but it's slow going. Can currently do 5k in about 33 minutes - try to get out 3 times a week for a run.

My dream is to do a 10mile run in September, as this would be 10 years since I last did it and would be a great motivator to get me back on my feet.

Before I get too fixated on this goal, would like your opinions, is it possible to get fit enough by September to complete a 10 mile run or should I aim for a shorter distance ?

10 mile in September is achievable, add 1km to your long runs each week and you'll reach your goal.

Just slow down if it helps to go that bit further. If 10 mile is your goal, don't worry about your time for now.

The Athletics and Running forum might be a better place to ask this question.

Going from 5k to 10 miles (16km) IMO is achievable, staying injury free getting there in a short space of time might be a problem if you're prone to injuries (I'm scourged with making progress due to injuries).

I've seen a lot of people similar to you start running, progress and add distance or pace and then get injured.

Given how long you are not training, I'd spend money on good advice now (rather than physios etc later) and get a more rounded fitness goals; think mobility, strength, endurance rather than just being able to run 10miles.

Start slow and listen to your body

Sound advice - lucidly I have not been accident prone in the past - but sure that was 10 years ago :)

I will take it slow, build up the distance slowly each week and see how I get on.

    Thanks!

You're just looking to build to the point where you can do 10 miles.

If you're running 3 times a week, that doesn't mean you need to increase the distance you cover in all 3. You really just want the confidence that you can cover the distance and a large part of doing that is managing your pace (as well as getting more mileage under your belt.

But I agree that the Athletics forum would be the best place to get a really good steer on how to structure the runs in the time you have.
