Wall knocked over by trafic

    Hi all,

Reading another post here, I wanted to ask for advise about possible assistance in recovering costs for my parents following damage to a boundary wall.

This old stone wall was hit by something overnight (no witnesses and certainly no one owned up to it) and tumbled into a field. A section of approx 6 feet long and 3 foot high has been destroyed. There are marks on some of the stones where whatever vehicle hit it.

Is there any help (council etc) for them in repairing this wall?

    Cheers!

That is what house insurance is for.

Report to Gardai as a hit and run material damage traffic collision. You may be able to claim from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau of Ireland.

Unless you can identify the vehicle that did the damage the MIBI wont cover property damage. Even if the vehicle is identified the MIBI expects you to claim from your own house insurance first.

Report it to the Gardai anyway. They have their own eyes and ears around so if you tell them that someone ran into your wall Sunday night, they might notice that someone's car from a couple of KM away seemed to have a few extra dents on it on Monday morning. Then they do a few enquiries, find out that the owner was down the pub last night, then knock on his door, give him a bit of a scare and he arrives down to your parents' house with a cheque for €1,000.

In a perfect world. But no harm to report it anyway, it's an offence to damage property in a vehicle and leave the scene without notifying the owner.
