I plan to make a purchase this Saturday. If it needs to be VRT'd within 24 hours how can I get it done on a Sunday?

I'm south Dublin based so would it be the VRO office in Tallaght?

Not sure where you got the 24 hours from. This is from the NCT website VRT faq section.
An appointment to have your vehicle inspected must be made within 7 days of the vehicle entering the State in order to register and pay the VRT (and any other tax liabilities due on the vehicle). You must then complete the registration process within 30 days of arriving in the State.

Just another query. I'm heading to the UK tonight to buy tomorrow.

Re the V5C/4 (notification of permanent export). Is it ok to just send this off when I've bought the car over in the UK? Do I need to speak to the DVLA on the phone before I leave the UK?

NO you must bring the Complete V5 cert home except for a small section where previous owner sends in to show car has been exported DO not send V5 to DVLA you need it for VRT

Make sure Seller knows this because if you send it to DVLA it can take a long time to get it sent to Ireland

The car isn't taxed once sold, in the uk under the new system the tax doesn't remain on the car when someone sells it. So you will be driving an untaxed car - i wouldn't worry about it once you have the V5 and a printed out ferry ticket to prove to the police you are indeed after buying it and are heading for home.

OP, read some of the importing a used car from the UK sticky at the top of this forum. All the information you need is in there. It's also on the NCT website.
