    Morning,
I am gathering all the parts I think I need for a decent cooling overhaul and a service for my e39 2003.
Car is is in great shape mechanically but I do not have any record of cooling parts being replaced.
So what I have so far to get fitted is

    Water pump
    Air con and aux belts
    Tensioners
    Egr temp sensor
    Coolant sensor
    Oil
    Oil filter

    What am I missing ?

This is my first diesel so little unsure of service parts

    Thanks guys

Coolant , yes... air filters are decent.

    Spark plugs on a diesel?

    Nope. Diesel uses glow plugs.

Expansion tank? Radiator? If you have the coolant drained I think it would be best to do as much of the entire system as possible. God only knows how old some of those parts are. Expansion tanks are a known area to fail, and not a terrible thing to replace. The rad is a relatively expensive part, so maybe you won't do that when it doesn't need it. But in an ideal world...

I went through coolant roulette with my 2001 e46 years back, I would have been much better off just replacing everything that could leak in one go.

As above but also look at thermostat housing too. Febi do most of the parts you need and they tended to be OEM suppliers at the time when it was new. Nissens I think supplied the rads.

Would be worth doing the fuel filter if it's never been done as well.

the expansion tank, thanks for that, i did it on another e39 so will pick one up, i will leave the radiator as it looks like a new one has gone in.

I have a new issue i noticed last night, a decent clunk when i hit brakes once, also when the cars is put in reverse, sounds like its from he drivers side wheel...

hope i have not started a long line of repairs, when the cars was perfect ;-)

    Hi,

I would make sure that the water pump you get is one of the ones that has a metal impeller. The plastic ones can fail and shear on the spindle...

One handy tip to note when removing the water pump is when you remove the bolts from the pump, you can then screw them into other nearby threaded holes to push the pump away from the block and break the gasket seals for easy removal without having to try jimmy it off with some flat blade tool/screwdriver etc..

Might be worth checking what state the fan belt is in too while you are there...

I’ve owned 2 of these e39s and I work for a bm specialist if you want any info on what to do or how to do it just ask. But to put it bluntly the e39 with the 3l engine was the best car Bmw have built to this day.

Really great to hear the below, this is my daily driver and its a fantastic car.

I want to be able to fully trust the car , be able to push it when needed and not have it sit down in a cloud of steam.

i hope you don't regret the above statement, i will be asking you all sorts.

what you say is the best thing that can be don't to the engine to help it last and perform correctly, EGR delete? remap? swirl flap removal?

No need for egr removal never came across that done. Blank off the swirl flap vacuum pipe that will sort that problem out. Make sure you change the turbo breather valve on this service. Only problem u will ever have with that engine is the turbos are the weak point but if u keep the turbo breather changed this shall prolong your turbo.
This engine is genuinely the best there is.

As regards to what goes on the go it’s self you will prob end up changing the rear pivot bearings on back axle. If it’s automatic just make sure you get the transmission filter and fluid changed. Also make sure when u get the transmission done that u get a new transmission sump gasket as these are prone to weep a bit.

All the above are not big issues at all. If u keep the car serviced you will never have a issue.
    Best of luck with it
If u require anymore info ask away

is the turbo breather valve, the same as the crankcase breather valve ? i have one ordered, i will fit that myself when it come in.
I have the swirl flaps blanked.

it is an auto and i want to get the oil changed and filter the auto box, not even sure where to get the parts for this...do you do this service in your place? could you IM a price ?

The vortex ones and the upgraded ones don’t worry about the e90 but it’s the engine that matters
