Hi there, myself and the future wife are thinking of honeymooning in S. Africa next April. What are people’s opinions and experiences?

April is a good time as far as I know, fairly mid season so won’t probably be the best weather but shouldn’t be too bad. Just googled and average is 18deg with 23 deg average high. So pretty much a regular Irish summer. We went a few years ago in July which is right in middle of their winter and locals couldn’t understand how we were wearing T-shirts when it was “only” 18 deg outside.
Dec/Jan is their summer and peak season-prices we’re almost triple that of July so I’d say April is probably somewhere in between.

Happy to help if you have any other questions!

We did South Africa last December and I couldn't recommend it highly enough.
We did the Garden Route and our itinerary looked something like this...

    Cape Town 3 nights
Stellenbosch 2 nights on a wine farm
Knysna 2 nights (would skip Knysna next time)
    Hog Hollow 2 nights
    Kariega Game Reserve 3 nights

Also happy to help if you want more detail. As I said, I was there in December which is their peak season so I can't advise on April weather.

We went to South Africa on honeymoon in April 2017.

    Cape Town 3 nights, recommended.
Stellenbosch 2 nights - we wish we'd stayed for a third night.
Oudtshoorn 2 nights - wish we'd skipped it. Really is nothing in it and our choice of hotel was poor. It's also pretty out of the way.
Tsala Treetop 2 nights - wish we'd done a third night
Plettenberg bay 1 night - recommended
Port Elizabeth 1 night - we just did this to break up the drive from Plett to our Safari, so we could guarantee arriving at the Safari as early as possible
Amakhala Safari 3 nights - three nights is enough tbh.

Weather was good. It's hot by our standards but not insanely hot - early to mid 20s. It got cooler in the evenings, so you would need to bring a few pairs of trousers and maybe the odd jumper. April can be a bit mixed weather wise, you might get a few showers.

It's off-peak season, so the hotels etc will be quieter and cheaper.

If you're doing a safari, make sure to arrive as early as possible on your first day to ensure you don't miss any drives. Generally you will go out at sunrise (~7am) and then in the afternoon (~5pm) until sundown. Bring trousers and jackets for safari, it will be cold.
