Fuel gauge

I'm just wondering about this. Sometimes when I fill the car up with diesel (if the fuel makes a difference?) the gauge on the car will indicate that I'll get 999km from the full tank when I leave the courtyard. Other times when I 'fill' up the car (i.e. it will not allow me to put any more diesel in), the gauge might say I will get 932km out of the fuel in the 'full' tank.

What would be the reason for this? Thanks/grma.

It’s based on the average l/100km your car is doing so if your fuel economy is down due to doing mainly short journeys some weeks/months then your kms to empty will be less based on that figure.

Very simple - its based on your very recent driving style.

Drive as economically as possible for 100km before your next fill and it will show 1200km

Excellent. That would explain it. I don't think the display can ever physically show more than 999km though (I had driven about 70km before it started moving below 999km). Thanks again.

Depending on my driving style, mine could show anything from 960 to 1400 for a full tank.

    Usually shows ~1200

The most mine shows is around 750.

Just remember, for those comparing numbers, that different cars have different size tanks (not to mention different fuel consumption rates), so the quoted numbers can’t really be compared across different models.

Vaguely related story: Years ago, why wife had a Seat Ibiza that the fuel gauge went on. She used to estimate how much she had left based on the mileage since her last fill (and when I say “fill” she only ever put €20 in at a time).

As petrol prices rose, she started running out of fuel further and further away from home.

    1400km?
Never seen a car that could do that much on a tank.

Car I drive is usually not more than 400 - 450km.

My doblo van showed something up near 1400 or 1500 for a brief bit after refuelling . Came straight off a motorway run to the garage.

    Diesel, 70L tank

148km travelled since the fill up ,and 1250km left.
That pic was taken in April, when I tried some eco driving for a few weeks before I got bored.

    I regularly get 1,150 km out of a 70L tank in a 520d. Always at least 1,050km.

If you have a 70L tank and can get 5L/100km average, you’ll see 1400km.
