If I were to get in a pay as you go meter from EI, and later wanted to change to a different supplier, what is the process?

Am assuming no meter change as that is ESB networks business, or would that have to change too?

    Hi CGI_3,

Thank you for getting in touch.

There are two types of Pay As You Go electricity meters - one is an ESB Networks one (this is for customers who wish to manage a balance) so yes, this does not need to be changed if there is a switch to another electricity provider.

The other type of PAYG meter is just a choice of payment method (arrears balance not necessary) and this is the electricity provider's meter rather than that of ESB Networks.

There are two types of choice PAYG meters from Electric Ireland - Smarter PAYG and Lifestyle Choice PAYG. There is a €60 credit for having a Smarter PAYG meter installed, and the service charge is 29 cent per day. There is a €20 credit for having a Lifestyle Choice meter installed, and the service charge is 19 cent per day. All electricity PAYG companies apply a daily service charge to their meters, and the Electric Ireland ones are currently the lowest-cost ones on the market.

When a choice PAYG customer changes provider, they will need a deactivation code for the meter of the company they leave, and then their new provider will organise installation of their new meter. When a balance management PAYG customer changes provider, they just need to request a change of provider code from their new provider, but as advised, the same meter remains in the property.

If you have any further questions, please let us know.

    Best regards,
    Una
