Im looking at Two 2014 320D M sports at the weekend, one is a 141 X drive and one is a 142. Both M sports so I would have thought road tax is the same. But, i checked the reg's and one is 200 per year tax and other is 270. Im thinking the one for 200 is an ED (efficient dynamics) , which i dont want. I thought M sports could not be obtained as an ED, even tho M sport is just cosmetic, maybe im wrong. Or, is the 141 higher tax due to 4 wheel drive ( X drive)?

The X-drive system adds extra weight and height to the suspension which means slightly higher co2 figures that pushes it into the next tax band. Sure it's no big deal anyway, it's only €70 extra a year.

Your answer is in the question I think. The tax difference is due to one being 4wd and one being rwd and the likely co2 output differences as a result.

    Edit: snap Bazz.

Some of the bigger alloy wheel options from the factory can affect emission tax bands too.

Thanks for that, yeah the 70 extra doesnt bother me but I just wanted to avoid an efficient dynamics due to loss in horse power.

Grey colour nicer and mileage 13000 lower with 141 X drive than the 142 Estoril Blue colour RWD. Obv the 142 is cheaper as a result. Any of you highly recommend the X drive?, dont hugely see the point of AWD in Ireland but maybe im missing something?

Buy the better car/the car you like the best. If X-Drive is the one you fancy then don't let 70 quid per annum sway that decision. I'd have RWD drive all day in a 3 series tbh... don't get the x-drive either.

The xdrive sits slightly higher than a rwd and doesn't look as good as a result. We have an x drive bimmer on the family fleet and 5 rwd bimmers in different guises. The 4wd is a great drive but would not sure I would pay a premium when new but if they are the same price now I would get it, no argument.

Thanks for that, yeah the 70 quid isnt an issue whatsoever. If it checks out nicely Id prob prefer the RWD as the cash premium for the 13000 lower miles and AWD isn't worth 3k extra to me. Really just want to ensure the RWD isnt an efficient dynamics model, hopefully paperwork clarifies this as the owner didnt know if he had an ED model or not

The efficient dynamics was a stand alone model and didn’t come as m sport so you should be safe there. The 17” alloys on the efficient dynamics were specific for that model so are a giveaway too.

Thanks, yeah I should be able to tell from paperwork too hopefully ,but nowadays you can get an ED with the sports and M sports trim so you could end with a different spec / HP than you expected
