Bora/Golf MK4 steering rack boot

Bora failed NCT the other day for the first time ever with cracked/perished steering rack boots - both sides. I ordered some and went at it yesterday and found it to be really awkward. There is hardly any clearance to get your hand in to the steering rack housing where you mount the boot and no way of knowing if you have it on fully/correctly other than getting a rough idea sticking an inspection mirror in. With the lack of clearance I found it impossible to use the fastening clips that came with the boots so used cable ties instead and there again I'm not sure how secure the boot is being held on the rack housing with the cable tie. Has anyone any ideas/tips for this job or is this the way it's done?
