    Hey folks

I know the printed mpg is never attainable but I’ve recently bought a brand new focus 1.0 ecoboost 125ps and having driven like a nun for its first 1000km I’m only getting 28mpg. Anyone else experience this was expecting between 35-40

What kind of driving do you do? Urban? Motorway? Mixed? And how are you calculating your fuel consumption?

They score very poorly on Honest John regarding fuel consumption. I'm driving a 1.0 TSI Octavia and fuel consumption was dreadful. It was only when I really dug in my heels after repeated visits to the dealer that they took me seriously. They did a software update on the engine ECU and things are better, still nowhere near the makers claimed mpg but at least it's better. It has gone from 32-37 mpg to the upper 40's. I can't see myself keeping it when the PCP is over.

    Upper 40's from a 1.0? That's quite impressive!

42,45 and 44 mpg from the last 3 tanks of fuel, Aircon running flat out for the last tank.

I get about 38/39mpg in a 12 Focus (1.0l 125ps). Typical weeks driving is 70% rural @ 60-80kph with plenty of braking and accelerating around bends, 20% urban @ <50kph and the remainder 100kph on N roads.

Definitely happiest cruising at 100kph when you'll see the mpg creep into the high 50's consistently.

    hi

Thanks for the replies, its 90% urban, d24 into town
i'm calculating if off the on board computer

Brim it. Drive a good bit. Rebrim it.

Note amount of fuel in litres, and the total distance travelled. Do the maths from there.

My Mrs is getting 48-52 now in her 1.0 TSI Ibiza now that it's ran in, impressive little car, between 650- 700kms on a tank of €55.

OP unless you are doing almost all urban driving that definitely doesn't sound right

Are you filling it? How many km to the tank are you getting?

Important to fill it to the brim, til you can see the fuel, or otherwise the difference in the pump at a particular station, or the fill pipe will corrupt all the calc. Brim to brim as stated above.

If it's a Lexus that might actually be true.

My brother had two of them

    LS 400 29/30 mpg

    LS 430 31/32 mpg.

The other point is that when a V8 can do 30 mpg - then 28 from a 1 litre is looking terrible.

I'm not disputing the statement that he's getting 32 mpg, it's just completely irrelevant to the op.

My son has one of those Focus and on motorway driving he gets 55mpg no problem.
At a push he has seen almost 60mpg.

Pushing is cheating... No wonder she's so light on juice.

There's your problem. You're never going to get anywhere near the advertised economy in urban driving. Think about how much time you spend sitting in traffic with the engine running burning fuel.

That's the spiel the dealer tried to sell me too, don't accept it. I really had to kick up a storm which included threatening to contact Skoda Ireland. Reluctantly they did the software update which transformed the car. My driving would be very mixed, I'd say about 80% town driving and consistently getting over 40 mpg. I'm on a tour of Kerry ATM I'm expecting good figures from this tank, over 50 I'd imagine.

Where did the software update come from. An actual Skoda update?????.

Because that should have been routine and not something to be fought for.

Of course it was done by Skoda the car was eating juice from the day I drove it off the forecourt, they kept fobbing me off with the usual rubbish, you can't do basic arithmetic, there isn't enough miles on the car yet, blah blah blah... I started keeping the petrol receipts with the trip mileage readings for every tank but they still gave me the runaround saying if it was still bad when the first service was due they'd look at it then. I told them to give me the settlement figure and I'd go to a dealer who's interested in more than just selling cars, it had 8000km at this time.

My apologies - I'm just flabbergasted at your dealer tbh.

Of course there's a difference, not 28 mpg though, that's Ford Escort territory, with stop/start and summer time it should be doing 40 mpg minimum.

No bother at all. I'm getting a free service for the hassle.... Not.

Considering the car is brand new then isn't there the usual 1k bedding in before the engine starts loosening up?
Also aircon on full and city traffic will never return good fuel economy.
