Oh dear oh dear....100K miles, good car.

I take on a lot of jobs with this car but I balk at this job when I look at YouTube videos with dashboard out etc for similar repair on E60.

Not confirmed to be evaporator but when I peer into the engine bay those 2 air con pipes disappear into the bulkhead and there is residue on the steering rod piece (whatever it's called) and I get a whiff of what could be refigerant/refigerant oil oil if I brake hard (like some spillage has landed somewhere hot)

Air con still works. A bit vague I know but has anyone fixed a similar issue on this car or E60? All advice welcome.

I would imagine it’s the ac rad. Normally the weekest point on the e60 jist get it gassed and dyied we have a crowd that do it for 90 Euro. And if there’s a leak the dye will show it up straight away.

Are you sure that it's not just the oily smell that comes off the aircon from time to time, particularly if it's not been used for a while?

Update on this... so it turns out that the smell is oil leaking from the cylinder head cover onto the exhaust and then burning off.

Still don't fancy it.... who's the best out there for this job on BMW 730i N52? Will travel as they say...

Valve cover gaskets are a handy job to DIY, very common areas for leaks on all BMW petrols, not sure does it affect diesels as much!

I guess I should consider DIY.... it's all a bit tight at the back, bulkhead area....

Guy on youtube reckons it's 3-4 hours for skilled mechanic, 7 hours for DIY.... that makes it a good 9 hours for me all going well! :D
