Long story short, car is 13 months old, bought new from dealership. Had service done at 12nmonths in garage beside were I work, reputable garage... Light was on that they couldn't knock off which also kept service light on. Rang dealership and was told if there is a problem, my warranty may be void for not using them for service, said I never got any parts replaced etc but they said engine oil can void warranty...

    Is this correct??

You don't have to get the car serviced by the main dealer to keep the warranty intact under EU regulations as long as the parts used are within the manufacturer's specifications and you have invoices or receipts to prove it. If a problem is attributed to incorrect servicing or incorrect parts used as defined by the manufacturer, then it would be up to you to provide via receipts from your garage, that the parts used were within the manufacturer's guidelines.

It's mad that a non franchise garage would even go at trying to "knock a light off" in a 12 month old car, when it's under manufacturers warranty.

As above, you don't have to service with a franchise dealer to keep your warranty, but you do have to service it to the manufacturers guidelines and you need proof of same, generally an invoice from a VAT registered garage outlining the parts and oil type used.

They are obliged to look at it. They probably jilted you a bit because you rang and said you were spending your money servicing elsewhere but your guy couldn't fix the problem so now you need to bring your problems to them. It's a human nature reaction unfortunately for both of you but they definitely have to look at it once you have proof of servicing on time.

Thanks all... Only reason for going to a different garage is because it was handler with work as they are next door to my job! Dealer is the other side of the city so would have needed time off work and hanging around waiting on it!
As I said, no parts we're replaced but surely engine oil is engine oil, how far wrong can a reputable servicing company go with that... They advised me to bring it back as its under warranty which I will do but I just found his "friendly warning" a bit ott!

    A lot....

There are probably around 20 different oil approvals in the use at the moment, and different one is required for different engines. The reputable garage however stocks two, maybe three oil types: expensive, less dear and cheap... They didn't use OE filter either...

If no parts were changed then it wasn't serviced.

And the wrong oil for the car is a very bad thing.

Id visit servicing garage and go through the invoice you received to be sure that it covers the requirements re appropriate servicing then go to dealer.
I wouldn't go to dealer with a non genuine oil filter fitted either.
