I have 131 1.6tdi vw golf.. notice over the weekend that it was losing power.

Brought to a main dealer today and they said the turbo needs to be replaced.

They have €2,500 to replace it.. does this sound about right..

That sounds about right for a brand new turbo fitted and supplied by a main dealer. You can of course get it replaced cheaper than that through a good independent garage and maybe reduce your costs further by fitting a reconditioned turbo rather than a brand new one. Did they tell what was the underlying cause of why the turbo needs to be replaced otherwise the same thing may happen again after the turbo is replaced. Identifying the cause is critical.

Got our turbo on the BMW reconditioned recently. Apparently oil was the problem in that it was dirty and the nails of the cover for draining the oil were very rusted, which could mean when we paid for an oil service that the garage we brought to hadnt done so in 3/4 years.

Very unusual for turbo to fail on such a new car unless it has something like 500k on the clock. Is it confirmed there is play on the turbine shaft? Does the car smoke a lot of non-black smoke and lose oil? I would get a second opinion from a turbo specialist if I was you

Theres nothinf saying shaft play/ wear is root cause of this really. What mileage is on the car?

They may have sucked out the oil ?

Thanks for the replies.. there is a 180k on the clock full service history from a main dealer.. no black smoke and no drop in oil..

The engine light is not appearing anymore either. The main dealer has said that the turbo isn’t fully gone will go shortly whatever he means by the that!!!’

Did you ask them to check for goodwill from the manufacturer? I'd say the parts cost is over half that bill so if the manufacturer gave you a bit of goodwill the bill would drop significantly.

    After 5 years and 180K?

Last time I went looking on a Ford they said no chance after 100K.

Definitely worth an ask if he has a full main dealer history. Mileage is a bit high but not unthinkable so, 35k kms per year is hardly excessive useage of a car like that.

It's easy to blame the turbo for any problems like air leaks in the induction system. Nice expensive component to replace instead of actually troubleshooting the issue properly. Bit like the countless of calytic converters replaced for no good reason as the mechanics are too lazy or incompetent.

When turbo "goes" you know all about it with the turbine wheel rubbing the housing making terrible racket and copious amounts of blue smoke.

When some control system like VNT mechanism gets sticky the turbo overboosts and the engine management takes the car to limp mode to protect the engine. But no new components are needed, just professionalism and skills.

Thanks again for all the replies...

Just to give you an update.

Brought the car to a reliable independent garage.. they had the car overnight ran the diagnostics and done all the checks and couldn’t find any problem with the car..

Think it was just a case of the main dealer chancing their arm.

Typical main dealer, making up faults on cars with no issues.
