Death of a Solicitor

I'm hoping someone might be able to offer some advice.

My solicitor, who worked for me on 3 property transactions, died unexpectedly recently. He was a sole practitioner and he was my cousin. He was based in another part of the country to me (I wouldn't otherwise have used him but for the fact that he was my cousin and I wanted to give him the business).

I received a letter from his widow (formal letter on practice-headed paper) saying that my files have been transferred to another solicitor. This solicitor is in a different part of the country again and I have never heard of or had any dealings with him. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable with this.

As I see it, I have 3 options:
    1. Go ahead with this new solicitor even though I don't know him and would never have reason to be in his part of the country. My cousin had been great about coming to me whenever things needed to be signed etc. and I'm not sure an unknown third party would be as generous.
    2. Find a solicitor to appoint in my part of the country. But as I'm not planning on buying any property in the new future, I'm not sure if a new, unknown solicitor would even be interested in taking on my business.
    3. My late cousin had a relative on another side of the family who is also a solicitor. Another relative of mine who used the same solicitor has transferred business to them. I don't know the other solicitor - they're not related to me and are also in another completely different part of the country.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

You can nominate any solicitor to hold your files

You can instruct your own solicitor and they will transfer your files

You would be better to have a solicitor recommended to you by someone you can rely on. It would be helpful if they are in a convenient location. You are not going to have the same relationship with any new solicitor as you had with your cousin. If there is no outstanding work you are entitled to take your files back, there is no need for any other solicitor to hold onto them.
