The upside of the vw cheating scandal

    First time taxing my newly acquired 152 golf r and impressed by the tax rates ,300bhp turbo petrol and only €570 for the year. Presume that is down to vw being economical with the truth in relation to the co2 figures

    While all companies cheat on the CO2 emissions, by having fake fuel efficiency testing, the VW cheating was on NOx and soot particles which don't affect petrol as much.

    Yeah saw a good documentary on Netflix about it and it was all nox they were on about , any idea how they arrive at the €570 category figure though , it’s desperate on juice so I presume a lot of it is going out the tailpipe ?

    You have to drive like Miss Daisy is in the back telling you to slow down. It's based on CO2 and that's the cheating that they all got away with, a lot of new cars will be way more expensive to tax with the new fuel efficiency testing.

    It's also the fact the CO2 emissions are based on the NEDC test, which is outdated and bares little relation to real world driving.

    Has Irish revenue a case against VW and Audi for loss of taxes or was a fine at EU level?

    NEDC is about to be history, it hasn't gone unnoticed to me that the emissions of a lot of new cars (especially German ones) have suddenly 'risen' as more and more cars switch to WLTP (although for CO2 emissions purposes, they are still somehow converted back to NEDC).

    No, it is because turbo cars do much better on the old fuel tests than in real life, as the drivers never actually drive on boost.

    The same is true for a Fiat 900cc twin-air.

    All car companies cheated on CO2, which is why the new test is in, only a few cheated on NOx and soot. Tax is based on CO2

    Great time to be buying a VW, I'd say their customer base has dropped off since the scandal, trying to claw back some new customers now.

    Not locally anyway, they are the best selling car maker in the country by a fair margin this year.

    I don't think that matters though. You aren't obliged to renew your PCP with the same manufacturer you bought from, so the people "trapped" three years ago didn't have to return, they could have went anywhere.

    Not sure what you are asking - the figures are for new registrations in Ireland 2018.

    VW are the top-selling car brand in Ireland in 2018 even before adding Skoda, Audi and Seat to the numbers.

    Toyota was the top-selling brand in January with 4,393 registrations, ahead of Hyundai (3,933), Ford (3,740), Volkswagen (3,590) and Nissan (2,873). So VW was actually in 4th place.

    I don't think that matters though. You aren't obliged to renew your PCP with the same manufacturer you bought from, so the people "trapped" three years ago didn't have to return, they could have went anywhere.

    Most people stick with a brand they are accustomed to, I'd hazard a guess that they may have been offered a better PCP deal with VW than with other manufacturers due to dieselgate.
    Wonder what the price drop in for diesel VW's were then the news came out...

    They made that up and then some since January. Share up to May:

    VW 10.87%
    Toyota 9.65%
    Hyundai 9.56%
    Ford 9.05%
    Nissan 7.84%
    Skoda 7.18%

    VW are always slow movers in January as they have a lot of factory orders with options ticked that don't get delivered until later. On average it can take 12 weeks (sometimes longer) to receive delivery of a VW with options from the factory.
