Any warning lights on the dashboard?
    What year is it?
Could be clutch on the way out, how many miles/km's on the car and is it on the original clutch?

Ignition coil failure is common on older ones.

Ignition coil failure is common on older ones.

That would be my guess too. Probably flash up the EML fairly soon after the initial symptoms of not getting up to speed as it should.

Open the bonnet and run the engine - should notice it shaking a lot more than it usually does, if one of the coils has gone.

The good news is that it's a reasonably priced fix - coils were about €40 last time I bought one, and it's an easy enough DIY. At that age though, if you are keeping the car for any length of time, you'd be better off replacing all the coils in one go - once one goes, there's a good chance the others aren't far off.
