VRT estimate

    Hi,

Trying to get an estimate of what VRT on a vehicle imported from the UK would be.

The vehicle is an 2007/2008 Mercedes ML 63. Needless to say the revenue VRT calculator doesn't have it listed.

Tried a couple of registrations in vrt.ie, an independent site and their database seems to think that an ML 63 is a Mercedes A45 AMG which is more than a bit frustrating given that the only reason you would pay for their service is because the revenue site doesn't have that model.

Any other options so a person could at least see what the cost of certain vehicles might be? It would be nice if you could put a price tag on something rather than show up and see how bad the charge is ...when its already too late.

If its not listed on the VRT calculator, and there's nothing close on the calculator, I reckon you're going to have to get a quote directly from the VRT office. You could use the VRT booklets to calculate but you will need the Revenue's estimate of OSMP before you can proceed.

How would I go about that I wonder?....just email them?

(I always thought they wouldn't engage with you until you had the vehicle in your possession which kind of made it a catch 22)

That is a good question. I don't have the answer.

This might give some guidance: https://www.revenue.ie/en/importing-vehicles-duty-free-allowances/documents/vrt/form-vrt-estimate.pdf

Yep, looks like you have to have bought it/own the vehicle, i.e.: get trapped to get a close estimate.

They will tell you present the car for inspection to get a VRT price which means you have it bought at that stage.

Thats basically a license to bend you over............

I tried that independent vrt estimate website today - costs a fiver.....returned unable to provide an estimate as a result and will refund the fee....which makes you wonder what they are in business for given their tagline is they can provide estimates for porsche, tesla etc

Is the reason they can't estimate because its up to an official to throw a dart at a dartboard or is there a formula that you could use if you take simi's price guide for that model and year and dpereciate it by a certain percentage for each year and get an estimate +/- a grand or two?

It seems the sources of info they take values from i.e.: glass's in the uk are paid services etc and a bit of a rigmarole

Is it just me but is it a bit irish that they can't just apply a formula to whatever the selling price of the vehicle would have been that year and charge vrt accordingly using a formula without the need for this ****ing bolloxing around....fair enough if you want to discourage high co2 or powerful cars etc but at least let people who may not want to drive the usual ****boxes what the privilege will cost them rather than play financial russian roulette with the whim of the person assessing.

Way too little transparency and too much scope for 'officials' to use their subjective assessments alright. And not much in the way of right of reply or challenge! And they class most vehicles as 'good', rather than 'fair' or 'poor'. Another way for them to get you!!
