PRSI - Before Retirement

We are retired now. Every time we go for dental or optical check ups we are asked if we are covered by PRSI and we always say no because we are retired. We do not have medical cards. We pay what we are charged. Someone told me that the PRSI which we paid all our lives should still stand to us now and we should be able to still get free check ups. I never heard of this. Is this right?
