At least it's easily traced to where it happened. Most likely it'd be petrol in the diesel tank or vice versa.

Apparently the tanker put Diesel into the Petrol tanks and a number of cars go caught before they realised what had happened. Not a good look for them

I always squirt a bit out of the pump onto the ground before filling up and smell it to see if its petrol.
Call me crazy but I wont get caught out like this.

Well I do and I haven't been caught out yet.
I'd say the people that got stung in Kylemore today are wishing they did.

I always just use a lighter to flash off whatever fuel residue is on the nozzle. You’ll know from the way it goes up whether it’s petrol or diesel.

I take an aul sip myself

I can taste the difference between "diesel" and "I can't believe it's not diesel" any day

I find the 98 RON petrol has a more tangy taste than the 95. Some stations were trying to charge more but I'm wise to them !!

i always carry a spare engine and fuel system for this very reason

I'm always afraid of putting ac instead of dc into the leaf when I'm charging.

A lot to be said for filling into multiple cans and siphoning into the tank when needed, you can have a good sniff beforehand :P

Funny that, I do tend to have spare engines for every daily driver I've had over the years... This includes the D4D I currently drive :o

    Wouldn't mind having a spare D4EA though! ;)

That's why I always jam a fork in the plug socket before I plug it in.

I bet half these people went out of their way to get cheap fuel, wasting €2-3 in the process. Negating any savings...

Always wondered why the place is so cheap, is it an Ushers quay situation or more genuine than that?

Terrible thing to happen to people, but it has to be said that a photo of multiple card broken down at a petrol station is indistinguishable from a photo of multiple cars filling up at a petrol station.

I pulled in there for a fill yesterday evening. Luckily enough for me, it was after they’d blocked off all the pumps. Forecourt was full of cars and angry faces.

I wonder what Diseal looks like when you spray a sample onto the forecourt.

I would have thought they'd have made it a fair bit down the road before the contaminated fuel made it to the engine?

yeah. surely theres enough in the lines and the filter to run a couple of miles. Wouldn't have thought anyone would be breaking down at the pump/

Looks like a lot of pre 2008 petrols from the photo. :/ I’m a bit skeptical all these cars are undriveable. I’ve seen misfuelling happen many times and the cars are driveable. Just keep topping up after it.

There must be something else wrong there.

On a serious note, I assume that the owners of the broken down cars will get their insurance company to put in claim against station to repair the cars as it was a mistake in filling the underground tanks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,401 ✭✭✭DublinDilbert

I would say the symptoms would show very quickly. The fact they are filling up means there's feck all petrol in them. Diesel is heavier so will go to the bottom of the tank where the pump picks up from. I'd guess the pump will still lift the diesel and start circulating it via the fuel rail. Very quickly you'd have bad fuel in the rail, imo.

It is suspicious though. I saw a Facebook post of the above cars and it was just one person commenting on it all, couldn't spell either. Typical disgruntled Facebook poster to be honest. Probably wasn't half as bad as he was letting on. Didn't hear anyone else saying it happened to them.

Surely you'd at least get into the road before anything happened?

Drove past about 30 mins ago. Totally empty, fuel truck on the forecourt. My assumption is that it's closed.

It's a legit company, actually quite large.

    See here: http://www.lccgroup.co.uk

They seem to be involved in the movement of fuel by the tanker load.

My brother shared a copy of that on facebook. Original thread seemed a bit hysterical "if it's too cheap it's too good to be true" and tagging everyone from ballyer, clondalkin and inchicore.

You won't use 2 - 2.5 l of petrol getting to it if it's your local. If their's a queue just turn the engine off.

They would have needed an empty truck to pull the diesel from the petrol tank. Wonder how hard it'll be to clean it up? Also... It's been a long time since I've worked at a petrol station so dont remeber the numbers off hand, but re-filling the tanks can only be done when you require a certain quantity. Chances are it could have been diesel mixed with petrol in there. Instead of the petrol tank being empty when diesel put in.

Oddly enough. I was there last week and they seemed to be quite low on diesel. Was only available on a few pumps.

Any fb links, wouldn't mind reading a bit of madness.

I exaggerated a bit there. It makes sense if you're local or if it's a small detour but I knew a few people going there. Lucan to Kylemore is a 15km trip, you'd burn any savings you made. It's a fairly built up area so not worth driving in that direction if you're not local.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,267 ✭✭✭mikeecho

What a complete balls of a situation for those drivers.
However.. one of them probably misfuelled by accident, and ended up getting the correct fuel.
    Their lucky day :D

Hopefully every customer kept / got a receipt, and that GO will make things right without much hassle.

Could have been the first few did get down the road and stalled. Came back up to warn the rest and now they don't want to damage their cars by moving them.

I've used Go but if it was a small detour. But yeah, I do know people who went completely out of their way to go to cheap petrol stations. Usually I just pull into whatever place is handy, I've no idea of the price!
