Analogue being switched off

    Hi All
Not sure if this is the correct area to post this but just looking for some advice. I’m living in my apartment the past 2 years and when I moved in there was a little white box on the wall with upc written on it and a cable attached to it (not sure of the correct name for the cable) anyways I connected the other end of that cable to my tv and it tuned in roughly 16 analogue channels. Last week I received a letter from virgin media addressed to "the tenant" stating that the analogue signal will be switched off in my area on the 2/7/18 and that id need to go digital. My tv has saorview built in so i tried retuning last night to see if I can pick up the digital channels but all im getting is the same 16 upc analogue channels. I dont have an account with virgin media so I cant exactly ring them. Im also not sure if there is a communal dish within the apartment complex as its quite a big complex. Do you think there is a dish as Im getting the analogue channels so where are they being fed from? I can’t erect a dish or aerial as this isn’t allowed and Im based in athlone with the nearest transmitter roughly 66km away so not sure if an indoor aerial would even be strong enough. Is there anything I can do with the existing cable thats connected to that upc box on the wall? Thanks

The signal is being received from Virgin/UPC cable not satellite or aerial. You will need to sign up to a service or install an aerial/satellite to continue receiving channels. I think 66km is too far for an indoor aerial.

I'm not sure if digital is sent through the same cable or if Virgin/whoever need to run new cables. Do your neighbours have a tv service?

Hi Wheety its a mixture some neighbours have the same setup as me but then there are others who have sky or virgin. I'm going to ask the management company if there is a communal dish.

They may have an agreement with a supplier like Virgin or Sky. So either a communal satellite or the cable is brought into a central point.

If it's of any help, there's a thread about the switch off on the Cable TV forum here.

    Hi offalyandroid,

Don't worry about calling us :-) We'd be more than happy to go over everything you need to get on the digital service. As you already have the outlet box and were receiving a signal it shouldn't be complicated at all.

We can deliver out the cabling and set top box for you to hook up yourself. There'd be an activation fee and a subscription cost per month and if you'd rather do this online you can find all the costs and order here: https://www.virginmedia.ie/television/buy-a-tv-package/

If you've any questions just head on over to our Talk To! :-)

    Thanks.
