Hi, could anyone tell me what the surface of the Royal Canal path is like? Suitable for mountain bike or road bike?? I'm looking at doing the rail greenway from Athlone and then adding on maybe 10k of the canal section going from Mullingar westwards towards Ballynacarrigy. Cheers.

Rail Trail is real smooth tarmac all the way into Mullingar. Canal is more stoney but OK for a road bike as well. My only caution is be careful going under the bridges, it's quite narrow and you wouldn't want either yourself or some poor Walker to end up in the canal.

    This too shall pass.

At most bridges you go up onto and cross the road that runs over the bridge
There's very little traffic on those roads
